Kahula Restaurant in Sturbridge to reopen lounge June 8 for indoor dining

STURBRIDGE — The Kahula Restaurant, which has offered only takeout food since May 2020, will offer indoor dining in the lounge area beginning Wednesday.

Like many restaurants, Kahula closed in March 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic worsened. It reopened in May that year for takeout only and has since operated with a to-go menu.

Hostess Amber Swett said customers responding to social media posts about the reopening of indoor dining are excited.

"We get calls, at least twice a day every day, asking when we are reopening," she said.

She said among the changes are a new bar manager and some upgrades to the lounge area.

As many restaurants have reopened, staffing shortages became an issue and that was something Kahula experienced as well.

Swett said her boss and restaurant owner Stephen Chan is, "always hiring."

An immigrant from China, Chan has been serving "high-quality Chinese & Polynesian cuisine," at the Kahula for many years.

The lengthy menu boasts a variety of offerings.

With Wednesday's dine-in option, the restaurant's hours will be 2 to 9 p.m. with the kitchen closing at 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 12:30 to 10 p.m. (with the kitchen closing at 9 p.m.) Thursday; 12:30 to 11:30 p.m. (with the kitchen closing at 9 p.m.) Friday and Saturday; and 12:30 to 8 p.m. (with the kitchen closing at 9 p.m.) Sunday.

Takeout will also still be available.
