Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford Keep Wearing This Controversial Shoe Trend

Kaia Gerber must have been tired of all the Cindy Crawford comparisons. It’s the only thing that could possibly explain the way she was dressing just a couple months ago. While dating Pete Davidson, Gerber actually started to look like him in denim, hoodies, and oversized plaid jackets. Their coordinated denim looks were so good some people were calling it Big Pants Energy, a more safe-for-work version of BDE. Whatever it was, Crawford and her husband allegedly weren’t fans and the relationship has since ended.

Although we’d argue that Gerber still channels Big Pants Energy and that her long legs still look like they invented pants, her looks are more Crawford than anything lately. That is to say, they feel more like something a supermodel would wear and less like the wardrobe of an SNL comedian from Staten Island.

Whereas an Alexander Wang cami dress and Prada Re-Edition 2005 bag aren’t necessarily Davidson’s thing, that’s basically what Gerber lives in these days. She also makes birks and socks look good which is, wait — also something Davidson has worn. Cindy Crawford has recently been spotted in the infamous pairing too. Has Davidson been inspiring their fashion choices all along? Let’s investigate.

Davidson has undeniable appeal. He has some je ne sais quois about him that famous brunettes are clearly into. It’s also what caused the internet to discuss his BDE at length two years ago. But nothing is more nonchalant than his wardrobe. Davidson always looks like he’s either wearing something he slept in or that he hasn’t gone to bed and has been wearing the same thing for 48 hours. The casualness is admirable. Some would say it’s kinda hot. Birkenstocks and socks seem like an obvious sartorial choice for him. But now that both Gerber and Crawford have worn the look, it feels less fuck-boy and more high fashion.

This is impressive because Birkenstocks used to have a bad reputation. They’re crunchy hippie meets The Last Supper. But in recent years they’ve made an unlikely return. They have Phoebe Philo’s furry Céline version to thank for that. Soon after, Givenchy and Rick Owens followed suit and offered their own glammed-up take on the OG ugly sandal. Now Birkenstocks are cool. With socks and sandals seen on the red carpet and on the Miu Miu and Gucci runways, the styling of birks with socks no longer feels like a faux pas.

Maybe we don’t give Davidson enough credit and he knew this all along. But now that Gerber and Crawford have both worn the look, we finally feel the need to give the look a try. And if it helps some famous brunette notice us, even better.
