Kaia Gerber Takes Max Mara’s Moody Lip to the Streets of Milan

When a runway show boasts what’s bound to be one of the most memorable group-think beauty moments of the season, it’s only natural to carry the aesthetic to the streets. Just ask Kaia Gerber. After closing Max Mara’s spring 2020 show—a presentation that also saw the supermodel stomping alongside Gigi and Bella Hadid and Joan Smalls, the quartet’s arms slung around each other’s waists—Gerber took with her a beauty souvenir: the day’s painstakingly painted onyx lip.

Dreamed up and deftly applied by makeup artist Tom Pecheux, Max Mara’s matte black translated well to the streets of Milan, particularly when coupled with Gerber’s soft brunette bob, worn deeply parted to one side. With so much focus falling on Gen-Z’s penchant for eye-level idiosyncrasies, a switch of the lip is a welcome—and decidedly cool—counter. Think a black lip is a note best reserved for Halloween’s forthcoming festivities? Look to Gerber and think again.
