Kamala Harris to visit Milwaukee suburbs on 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade

MADISON - Vice President Kamala Harris will visit the Milwaukee suburbs Monday to recognize the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion ruling that was overturned in 2022 — catapulting the issue to the center of American politics since.

Harris will visit Waukesha to "highlight the harm caused by extreme abortion bans and share stories of those who have been impacted in Wisconsin and across the country."

The U.S. Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade revived a dormant 19th Century state law that banned abortions in Wisconsin in every situation except when the mother would die without one. But in December, a Dane County judge ruled the law did not apply to consensual abortions.

Abortions were suspended for a total of 15 months in between the U.S. Supreme Court ruling and the Dane County ruling.

The issue remains politically salient for Democrats who have seen voter mobilization over the issue in two of the last three major statewide races: for governor and state Supreme Court.

The visit will take place the same day Republican lawmakers plan to hold a hearing on a bill that would ban abortions in Wisconsin after 14 weeks, except in situations that would jeopardize the mother's life or health.

Harris "will also hold extremists accountable for proposing a national abortion ban, call on Congress to restore the protections of Roe, and outline steps the Administration is taking to protect access to health care," Harris' office said in a statement about her visit.

Harris' office has not released details of her visit other than the location and date.
