This Kansas City bar closed after five years. Now it’s back open — with some changes

Brookside’s Flying Horse Taproom, which temporarily closed in October, is back open.

Owner Trey Sabates said he and his wife, Kelsey, felt the space, which opened in 2018, had become “a little stale.”

“We added bench seating, lots of sound panels to address the noise, a new paint scheme and rearranged furniture to improve the flow for customers and workers,” Sabates said.

They’ve also shaken up the menu, with assistance from chef James Landis.

Flatbreads, an anchor of the original menu, remain. But they have added items like a butter burger, a bison burger, a chicken biscuit sandwich (with slaw, pimento cheese, arugula and pickles) and a meatloaf sandwich (with pickled jalapenos, Dijonnaise, sharp cheddar and tomato bacon chutney).

New starters include a Grotto Salad (Pink Lady apples, red onion, Gorgonzola, candied walnuts and a lemon mustard vinaigrette) and a Cauliflower Cheddar and Brown Ale Soup.

“There will still be lots of rotating craft beers with a heavy focus on local,” Sabates said, as well as signature cocktails and wine by the glass or bottle.

Hours for now are Wednesday to Saturday, 4 to 10 p.m., and Sunday 4 to 9 p.m. But Flying Horse plans to begin serving brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays starting Feb. 3.
