Kansas City charter school closed Tuesday due to threat

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City charter school canceled classes Tuesday due to a social media threat, school leaders confirmed.

Early Tuesday morning, leaders at KIPP Kansas City learned of the threat to KIPP Legacy High School. The school is located near E. Truman Road and Winchester Avenue in east Kansas City.

In a statement, school officials said they launched an investigation and contacted Kansas City police, who confirmed they are also investigating.

KIPP leaders did not disclose the nature of the social media threat.

The charter school said it decided to cancel class out of an abundance of caution.

However, KIPP plans to resume classes again on Wednesday with additional security measures. School leaders did not share any details on what extra security steps it will take.

According to its website, KIPP Kansas City is part of a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory charter schools. It also has an elementary and middle school located at 18th Street and Prospect Avenue.

KCPD said the KC Regional Fusion Center has also been notified and will continue to monitor for any additional threats that would cause significant damage to life and property.

A KCPD spokesperson said working with the Fusion Center isn’t new. The organization is often utilized in an instance where there’s a threat to a large number of people, property or something like a specific group. They are not used specifically for school threats.

According to its website, the Kansas City Regional Fusion Center brings local, state and federal law enforcement officials together with public and private organizations to detect, deter and respond to terrorist threats in the Kansas City community.

The Fusion Center’s Interagency Analysis Center collects information from various sources. This data is evaluated and analyzed in an effort to identify potential trends or patterns of terrorist or criminal operations within the region.
