Kansas City fire leaves 4-year-old dead, 5 other victims injured

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Fire Department says a 4-year-old child died after being trapped in a house fire on Tuesday morning.

Five other people were also evaluated for injuries after escaping.

Just after 9 a.m., KCFD responded to a trailer home fire near E. 33rd Street and Oakland Avenue, which is in between U.S. Highway 40 and Interstate 70, slightly northwest of the Truman Sports Complex.

Responding firefighters reported heavy smoke and were alerted to someone trapped, leading to an immediate search. Medics took the boy to Children’s Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Three other children and two adults were taken to hospitals for evaluation.

Crews brought the fire under control, and the Bomb and Arson Unit is taking over the investigation.

The bomb and arson unit partners with KCFD investigators from the beginning on deadly fires in the event that any criminal wrongdoing is discovered.

A spokesperson with the KC Police Department said, upon initial investigation, there don’t appear to be any signs of foul play.
