Kansas City ‘island-style’ sandwich shop is opening another Johnson County location

Locally owned Longboards Wraps & Bowls has been growing steadily since its inception in 2004.

It started with its 6269 N. Oak Trafficway location, then grew to four more in the Kansas City area: 5415 Johnson Drive in Mission, 8775 W 95th St. in Overland Park, 506 S.E. Missouri 291 Highway A in Lee’s Summit, and 1173 W Kansas St. in Liberty. (It also has a location in St. Joseph.)

Now, the brand is readying to open its sixth Kansas City spot, 8150 W. 135th St. Overland Park, said owner John Bailey.

One of Longboard’s founders, Gilbert Macapagal, moved from the Philippines to California when he was 16. His time in both places influenced the store’s current menu, which serves “island-style” food in a surf shack-esque atmosphere.

Longboards serves sandwiches like its grilled cabo chicken wraps (chicken, guacamole, pico de gallo, rice and chipotle ranch) and its pork luau wrap (pork, pepperjack, pineapple, vegetables, rice and teriyaki sauce).

The restaurant also offers its wraps in bowl form.

Bailey hopes to open the new restaurant in May or June. It’ll be Longboard’s southernmost location in the metro.

Similar concepts have grown in popularity in Kansas City. In 2018, Hawaiian Bros Island Grill opened its first location in Belton.

While Hawaiian Bros expanded, Utah-based Mo’ Bettahs entered the Kansas City market in 2022.

Mo’ Bettahs has six locations in the area, while Hawaiian Bros has more than a dozen.
