Kansas City Mavericks welcome Utah Grizzlies for 3-game homestand starting Friday

The ECHL-leading Kansas City Mavericks are coming off one of their shortest weeks of the season. The Mavericks had just two games on the schedule, both against longtime division rival Wichita.

The two teams met for the 12th time this season on Friday at Wichita’s Intrust Bank Arena. And, as has been the case for the majority of these matchups, this one was all Mavericks.

Goals from Nolan Walker, Jeremy McKenna, Max Andreev and two from Patrick Curry gave the Mavericks a relatively smooth 5-2 victory.

Having already secured the third-most ECHL wins in franchise history, still with 25 games remaining, Kansas City entered Saturday’s game at Cable Dahmer Arena looking to extend its winning streak to five.

Saturday’s game was the team’s First Responders Night. In front of more than 5,000 fans — big crowds are becoming a common occurrence at Mavericks home games — Wichita used a big second and third periods to send Kansas City off the ice with a 5-3 loss.

Curry, McKenna and Jacob Hayhurst scored the Mavericks’ three goals and continue to move up the ECHL and franchise scoring leaderboards.

The loss was just the second in regulation since mid-December for the Mavericks.

Currently sitting at the top of the ECHL standings, the Mavericks are 36-9-2-1 (75 points), five points clear of the league’s second-place team.

Coaches’ show

The Mavericks will be back on the airwaves Tuesday night for their monthly Coaches Show, broadcast live on Sports Radio 810 from Scheels in Overland Park.

Mavericks coaching staff and players will talk about their winning ways, upcoming theme nights and more. Planned are ticket raffles and giveaways of autographed items, and Mac the mascot will make an appearance.

Big week ahead

The Mavericks have a rare three-in-three homestand this weekend.

With games Friday, Saturday and Sunday against the Utah Grizzlies at Cable Dahmer Arena, the Mavericks look to continue to increase their division and league leads.

Crowds at Mavericks home games are at their highest point in four years. KC has sold out each of its last four theme nights.

Sunday is the Mavericks’ Faith and Family game with a 4:05 p.m. puck drop. Tickets for all remaining home games are available at kcmavericks.com or by calling 816-252-7825.
