A man was shot and killed Thursday evening in Kansas City’s Blue Hills Park, according to police.

The shooting unfolded shortly before 7 p.m. Police were dispatched to the 5200 block of Brooklyn Avenue in response, Officer Donna Drake, a department spokeswoman, said at the scene.

Police arrived within one minute of the call being made over dispatch radio and found one gunshot victim, described as an adult male. The officers attempted live-saving measures, Drake said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

One person of interest, also described as an adult male, was taken into police custody. Police were not searching for anyone else in connection with the homicide as of Thursday night, Drake said.

The events that preceded the killing were unclear. Drake said detectives were working toward developing information about what led up to the fatal encounter.

On Thursday evening, the southeastern part of the park remained blocked off with police tape as investigators processed the crime scene. A K-9 Unit was brought out to assist with evidence-gathering. Detectives were also canvassing the area for witnesses.

The killing marks Kansas City’s 106th so far in 2022, according to data maintained by The Star. Last year, the city saw a total of 157 homicides, representing the second-deadliest year on record.

Kansas City police were asking anyone with information about the killing to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
