Friends say the victim’s name is Jon Paul, 66, also known as Buddy Lush. Friends say he’s been in intensive care since the crash.

According to KCPD, two SUVs were racing at a “very high” speed northbound on Troost. KCPD reports one or both of the SUV drivers struck Paul, who was on a scooter, and both vehicles left the scene without stopping.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be either a Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento. Police say one of the SUVs turned east on 76th Street after the crash occurred. KCPD has not provided a physical description of either driver.

Paul works as a delivery driver at Waldo Pizza and performs in a band called “The Buddy Lush Phenomenon.

“The nurses at the ICU numerous times have told me how many people have been coming in, constantly, to talk to him and give him their love,” said Brock Ginter, a bass player in the band.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Paul as he continues to recover.

“When somebody that’s as good a person as JP is, it really really hurts,” said Waldo Pizza Manager Phil Bourne. “We’re just trying to remember him and keep him in our prayers and keep him alive, and hopefully, we’ll see him again.”

“You can’t undo that, but this person could make things better by coming forward and taking responsibility. Just make things better. That’s what we’re asking. Do the right thing,” Bourne said.

If you have any information about the crash call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 or KCPD’s Traffic Investigation Section Detective at (816)-482-8189.
