The Kansas City Royals are exploring their options with the MLB trade deadline on the horizon.

Several teams have inquired about relievers Aroldis Chapman and Scott Barlow. Both players have the ability to pitch in high-leverage situations. Chapman owns a 2.82 ERA and Barlow has converted seven of eight save opportunities.

Royals captain Salvador Perez is another name in the rumor mill. A report from The Athletic (and confirmed by The Star) said the Royals have received calls regarding their seven-time All-Star catcher.

Royals general manager JJ Picollo confirmed the leaked report. However, he said the organization has no interest in trade talks involving Perez.

“We don’t have any intention of trading Salvy, and it’s not something we are looking to do,” Picollo said.

Perez has spent 12 seasons with the Royals. He was instrumental in the 2015 World Series run and is beloved by the fan base. He is a former World Series MVP and is putting up All-Star numbers this season.

It’s easy to see why teams are interested.

Perez leads the Royals with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs. He ranks second among primary catchers in doubles (14), slugging percentage (.502) and on-base percentage (.810).

However, Perez can veto any trade as a 10-and-5 player. The rule factors in a player’s MLB service time with one organization. Perez earned the special status as he has played at least 10 seasons and five consecutive years with the Royals.

“I think we all have to keep in mind that he has full no-trade rights. He completely controls the destiny and he has told us over and over again he wants to be a Royal his whole career,” Picollo said.

In 2021, Perez signed a four-year extension worth $82 million. The Royals hold a club option for the 2026 season that includes a $2 million buyout.

“He’s trying to lead our team,” Picollo said. “And to be dealing with a trade rumor that was more inquisitive than anything, it was made out to be more than it should have been.”

Perez addressed the trade rumors after the Royals loss on Monday. He said he loves Kansas City and would like to stay with the organization. However, he understands the business of baseball.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen, to be honest with you guys,” Perez said. “I know tomorrow we’re going to be here and I’m going to play hard again.”
