The Kansas City Royals dipped back into the free-agent pool on Saturday.

The Royals reportedly signed infielder Adam Frazier to a one-year contract with a mutual option for the 2025 season.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post was the first to report the deal. MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand said the agreement is worth $2 million in 2024 with a $8.5 million mutual option. The contract also includes a reported $2.5 million buyout.

The Royals had not confirmed the signing as of about 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The addition of Frazier, 32, would address the Royals’ stated desire for a veteran left-handed infielder. Last season, Frazier recorded 13 home runs and 60 RBIs in 141 games with the Baltimore Orioles. He started primarily at second base but also has corner-outfield experience.

The Royals hope to better compete in the American League Central this season. KC general manager J.J. Picollo spent this offseason signing a host of experienced veterans. Frazier joins a group of newcomers that includes pitchers Michael Wacha, Seth Lugo, Will Smith, Chris Stratton and Nick Anderson.

KC also signed outfielder Hunter Renfroe and utilityman Garrett Hampson to short-term deals. Renfroe is expected to start in right field while Hampson will be deployed at multiple positions this season.

Frazier, who was a 2021 All-Star, began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent six seasons with the Pirates before stints with the Orioles, San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.

The Royals started Michael Massey at second base last season. He hit .229 with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs in 129 games. His on-base percentage in 461 plate appearances was .274, but Massey is still likely entrenched at the keystone position.

He made strides defensively working with Royals infield coach Jose Alguacil and created a dynamic tandem with shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.

Frazier adds another veteran option. He could work alongside Massey at second base or be plugged into the outfield, if needed. Royals manager Matt Quatraro likes to shuffle his lineup depending on the matchup.

The Royals have created depth at multiple positions this offseason. Several players will have to earn their roster spots in spring training. There will be competition for bullpen roles and final spots on the bench.

The Royals depart for spring training in Surprise, Arizona soon. Kansas City’s pitchers and catchers are scheduled to hold their first workout on Feb. 14; KC’s first full-squad workout is Feb. 19.

Opening day is set for March 28 against the Minnesota Twins.
