Kansas father arrested after newborn son dies from injuries, officials say

A 24-year-old northeast Kansas man has been arrested in connection with the death of his newborn son.

Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents and deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office took Jason Marnell of Richmond into custody Wednesday during a traffic stop north of Richmond, the KBI said in a news release.

He was booked into the Franklin County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and abuse of a child, according to the release.

On the morning of Jan. 14, deputies responded to a medical call at an address in Richmond. They found 1-month-old Waylon Marnell unresponsive. He was given emergency treatment and taken to an Ottawa hospital, the KBI said.

“The investigation led agents and deputies to believe Marnell was responsible for the injuries that caused Waylon’s death,” the KBI added.

The baby was later transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City in critical condition. He was removed from life support and died on Jan. 28, the news release said.

The KBI was asked to assist in the investigation. The extent of the boy’s injuries and how he died were not disclosed.

Richmond is a roughly 2-hour drive northeast of Wichita.
