Recap: Kansas football loses 38-31 against TCU in Big 12 Conference matchup
LAWRENCE — Kansas and TCU football met up Saturday in Lawrence in what was a matchup of two unbeaten Big 12 Conference programs.
The No. 17 Jayhawks came in after a 14-11 victory against Iowa State. The No. 18 Horned Frogs came in after a 55-24 victory against Oklahoma. Last season, TCU topped Kansas in a 31-28 win.
Did coach Lance Leipold’s Jayhawks squad sustain its magical run, one that brought ESPN’s “College GameDay” show to Lawrence? Did coach Sonny Dykes’ Horned Frogs squad spoil the fun? This contest was critical to the Big 12 standings at this point in the season.

The Jayhawks drove the ball into Horned Frogs territory late, but couldn't get into the end zone. A failed fourth-down conversion gave TCU the ball back, and the visitors ran out the clock.
TCU takes a late lead
The Horned Frogs are back on top with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter. A 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Max Duggan to wide receiver Quentin Johnston delivered the go-ahead score, and the extra point made it 38-31. The drive itself went 68 yards in six plays and took 2:36 off of the clock.
Johnston is up to more than 200 yards receiving on the day now. He's been a problem all game for the Jayhawks.

Another incredible connection between quarterback Jason Bean and wide receiver Quentin Skinner delivered another touchdown for the Jayhawks. This was a 29-yard strike, that also survived a review. After the extra point, and the four-play drive that went 61 yards in 2:19, Kansas and TCU are tied up at 31-31 with 4:21 left in the fourth quarter.
Kansas misses a field goal
The Jayhawks drove into the red zone, but didn't come away with points. Kansas had to settle for a field goal, and kicker Jacob Borcila missed from 31 yards out. It remains a 31-24 lead for TCU with 8:03 left in the fourth quarter.

With 0:23 left before the third quarter would end, TCU quarterback Max Duggan hit wide receiver Taye Barber for a 25-yard touchdown pass. It capped off a drive that went 50 yards in five plays and took 1:27 off of the clock. After the extra point, the Horned Frogs went up 31-24.

Jayhawks quarterback Jason Bean and wide receiver Quentin Skinner connected for a 38-yard touchdown pass, on a heck of a catch by Skinner that stood after a review. The drive itself went 72 yards in four plays, and also included a great catch by wide receiver Lawrence Arnold on a 26-yard gain as it took 2:05 off of the clock. It's 24-24, after the extra point, with 1:50 left in the third quarter.
TCU is back in the lead
The Horned Frogs made the Jayhawks pay for that interception, and drove for a touchdown. The drive went 26 yards in five plays and took one minute off of the clock. Quarterback Max Duggan ran the ball in himself from three yards out, and after the extra point TCU is up 24-17 with 3:59 left in the third quarter.
Jason Bean throws an interception
Jason Bean's quality play at quarterback for the Jayhawks took a hit, as he threw an interception that gifted TCU the ball with great field position. With about five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Horned Frogs are in prime position to take the lead. Until then, though, it's still 17-17.
TCU ties the score
Kansas didn't have the lead for long, as TCU went on a four-play drive that went 61 yards in 1:03. Quarterback Max Duggan found Derius Davis on a 51-yard touchdown pass that capped it off. After the extra point, it's a 17-17 score with 6:29 left in the third quarter.

Jalon Daniels is on the sideline in street clothes. It appears he's not going to return to the game. And his right arm is in a sling.
But after the turnover, Jason Bean just led Kansas to another scoring drive at quarterback. The drive went 40 yards in five plays and took 2:06 off of the clock. Bean completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Luke Grimm, and after the extra point the Jayhawks are up 17-10 with 7:36 left in the third quarter.
TCU fumbles the ball away
After the two sides traded stops, TCU fumbled the ball away on its next drive. A completed pass from quarterback Max Duggan to wide receiver Geor’quarius Spivey looked as if it would get the Horned Frogs a good gain, but Kansas safety Kenny Logan Jr. forced and recovered a fumble to get the Jayhawks the ball back. Kansas took over at about the TCU 40 yard line with 9:42 left in the third quarter.

Jason Bean is in at quarterback to start the second half for the Jayhawks, with Daniels potentially out for the remainder of the game with an injury. And so far, everything is going well for Kansas. Bean just led a scoring drive that went 75 yards in four plays and took 2:01 off of the clock, and ended with a 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mason Fairchild.
After the extra point, Kansas and TCU are tied 10-10 with 12:59 left in the third quarter.

TCU quarterback Max Duggan threw a deep ball near the end of the half that was intercepted by Kansas safety O.J. Burroughs. After that turnover, Jason Bean came in at quarterback for the Jayhawks to take a knee and send the game into halftime.
Kansas hits a field goal
The Jayhawks are on the scoreboard after a 40-yard field goal by Jacob Borcila. That capped off an eight-play drive that went 53 yards and took 2:50 off of the clock. With 0:36 left on the clock in the second quarter, TCU's lead was cut to 10-3.
The Jayhawks may have lost quarterback Jalon Daniels to injury during this drive. A hit he took near the sideline just before the field goal attempt left him down on the field for a little bit. And then he was checked out in the injury tent, before heading into the locker room before the half had ended.

The Horned Frogs didn't let their opportunity go to waste, and after forcing a turnover capitalized with a touchdown drive. A six-play, 99-yard drive that took 2:36 off of the clock ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Kendre Miller. It's a 10-0 lead for TCU with 3:26 left in the second quarter.
Something to watch moving forward, is Horned Frogs wide receiver Quentin Johnston already has 139 yards receiving on eight catches. He's just been carving up the Jayhawks' secondary, with the help of quarterback Max Duggan. And Kansas will need to do something, maybe double him, to slow Johnston down.
Jayhawks fumble the ball away
After forcing another punt from TCU, Kansas drove down into the red zone and seemed poised to score. A great catch by tight end Mason Fairchild, on a pass from quarterback Jalon Daniels, helped kick-start the drive with a 48 yard gain. But just outside the end zone, Daniels fumbled the ball away and turned it over.
TCU took over at its own 1 yard line with 6:02 left in the second quarter, still leading 3-0.
Kansas drive ends with failed 4th-down conversion
After Kansas and TCU traded a punt each, the Jayhawks drove down into Horned Frogs territory. It was arguably the best Kansas drive so far, and one that included the Jayhawks getting lucky when a fumble by running back Ky Thomas was recovered by Kansas. But on 4th and 5 at the 32 yard line, a pass from quarterback Jalon Daniels to wide receiver Quentin Skinner fell incomplete and the Jayhawks turned the ball over on downs.
TCU still leads 3-0 with 10:22 left in the second quarter.

Jayhawks come up with big stop defensively
TCU drove into Kansas territory again. The Horned Frogs looked as if they might be on another scoring drive. But on 4th-and-short, just inside the 40 yard line, a TCU run didn't get enough and Kansas will take over with 3:59 left in the first quarter with the score still at 3-0 — in favor of TCU.
Max Duggan is playing well for the Horned Frogs at quarterback. He's been hard to bring down. It just hasn't translated to touchdown drives yet for TCU.
Kansas punts on its opening drive
The Jayhawks weren't able to answer the Horned Frogs' scoring drive, and wound up punting the ball away after getting near midfield. Quarterback Jalon Daniels tried to take a couple different shots downfield, but couldn't connect with his intended wide receivers. Kansas showed flashes of potentially having some success with Daniels on the move, but will obviously need to make more plays.
TCU opens scoring with field goal
The Horned Frogs drove deep into Jayhawks territory, but had to settle for a field goal. The drive went 57 yards in 10 plays and took 4:10 off of the clock. With the 39 yard field goal, TCU leads 3-0 with 10:46 left in the first quarter.
This is what Kansas' defense is really good at. While teams may rack up yards on the Jayhawks, they aren't scoring as many touchdowns as that might make things seem. Defensive coordinator Brian Borland has even referred to that as a confidence booster in the past.
