Kansas high school basketball game scores: Andale boys rally for win over Collegiate
In nearly two decades coaching the Andale boys basketball team, Jeff Buchanan knows how difficult it is to pull off fourth-quarter comebacks.
Andale has already pulled that off twice in its first two games of the season, the most impressive coming on Tuesday evening when Andale rallied for a 58-47 home win over Collegiate, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 3A.
“We’ve had some ups and downs already, but in the end these guys have shown the grit and toughness and composure of how to win a ballgame,” Buchanan said. “There will be teams that go an entire season and never have that experience of fighting back and scrambling every which way to win a game. We’ve already done it twice, so this is something for us to build on and to know that we’re never out and there’s always an opportunity to turn the game.”
Collegiate is playing the first month of the season without talented sophomores Jaden Parker and Sebastian Hines-Turner, who are recovering from injuries sustained during football season.
But the Spartans are still plenty dangerous even without two stars, as sophomore A.J. Batiste (19 points) showed in helping Collegiate build a 40-34 lead on the road in an AV-CTL Division IV rivalry game.
After succumbing to Collegiate’s high-intensity pressure in the third quarter, Andale cut down on its turnovers and kept its poise for a dominant final eight-minute stretch when it outscored Collegiate 24-7.
The rally began with junior reserve Harrison Potucek, who scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter. He also assisted on some key baskets, namely 3-pointers from Michael Braaten, who finished with 16 points. Junior Austin Baalmann scored a team-high 19 points to lead Andale.
“Harrison got a couple of steals and found ways to get to the hole. He was our spark and he did the same thing for us (Friday in a come-from-behind win over Valley Center),” Buchanan said. “He started to take care of the ball and kept our composure. It was a great win for us.”
