Kansas high school basketball game scores: Wichita State recruit hits career milestone
The top-ranked Wichita Heights boys basketball team continued to roll through opponents to begin the season, as Wichita State signee T.J. Williams hit a career milestone.
The Falcons improved to 5-0 this season with a 56-37 road win at Hays, as Williams scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to surpass 1,000 career points on Tuesday night.
Williams is averaging a team-high 18.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 2.0 steals in the first five games of his senior season. He is also shooting 69% from the field and 83% on free throws for Heights, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 6A.
Earlier on Tuesday, WSU head coach Paul Mills was asked about his thoughts on the 6-foot-6 guard, who is signed to Wichita State’s 2024 recruiting class.
“His passing ability, his downhill ability, and the thing I’m most impressed with is he’s really assertive, both vocally and with the ball in his hands,” Mills said. “Sometimes when guys play, because they’re better than others, they may be a little passive, but you can tell he takes the lead and you appreciate that from a competitive standpoint knowing you’re going to have a player who’s that assertive and others will follow. So I’m very mindful of his leadership abilities and I’ve seen it portrayed on the court.”
Among the other notable scores from Kansas high school basketball games, Hutchinson prevailed with a dramatic 51-49 road win at Campus in a battle of undefeated teams in AV-CTL Division I.
With the score tied in the final seconds, Campus missed a potential go-ahead shot; Hutchinson rebounded and started a fast break the other way that ended with a Taishaun Govain layup that was goaltended with one second remaining. That marked the game-winning points.
Drake signee Andrell Burton Jr. scored a game-high 21 points, while Kaason Thomas added 16 for Campus, ranked No. 10 in Class 6A. Hutchinson, ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, improved to 5-0 behind 13 points from Govain and a team-high 17 from Terrell King.
In another key AV-CTL Division I boys rivalry game, Michael Kates scored a game-high 19 points to lead Maize South, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, to a 79-56 win over Derby.
The top girls game of Tuesday featured a ranked showdown between Derby, No. 9 in 6A, and Maize South, No. 5 in 5A. The Panthers pulled away following halftime for a 58-44 win, as Macayla Askew scored 15 points to help secure the key league win.
