Kansas high school state wrestling: Here’s which wrestlers advanced to KSHSAA semifinals

Thursday marked the first day of the Kansas high school state wrestling tournaments, which saw boys and girls from around the state punch their ticket to the semifinals.

Friday will determine who will wrestle in Saturday’s KSHSAA state-championship matches.

Here’s a full rundown from the Wichita area highlighting Day 1 of the state wrestling tournaments for all classes and for boys and girls.

Class 6A boys results

106: Derby junior Jayden Grijalva (No. 2) notched a first-period pin over Wichita Southeast junior Damarie Martin (No. 3) in the quarterfinals. Grijalva (34-3) advanced to the state semifinals for the second straight year and will face Mill Valley’s Jeredy Nilges (No. 4).

113: Wichita Southeast senior Jamal Garrett (No. 3) scored the match-winning reversal with 26 seconds remaining in the third period to capture a 6-5 decision over Wichita North sophomore Thomas Shields (No. 6) in the quarterfinals. Garrett (30-6) will face Olathe Northwest’s Gabe Sherrell (No. 2) in the semifinals.

132: Maize freshman Vincent Rosas (No. 2) pinned Derby junior Liam Coultis (No. 6) in the second period to advance to the semifinals, where Rosas (42-9) will face Lawrence’s Andrew Honas (No. 3).

138: Maize senior Daniel Gomez (No. 3) pinned Manhattan’s Jameal Agnew (No. 4) in 51 seconds to punch his ticket to the semifinals, where Gomez (41-9) will face top-ranked Dillon Cooper, a defending state champion from Mill Valley. It is the third straight year Gomez has reached the state semifinals.

144: Derby senior Diego Gauna (No. 5) scored the winning escape point with 14 seconds left in the third period to prevail in a 6-5 decision over Washburn Rural’s Brodye Kocher-Munoz (No. 2) and advance to his second career semifinal. Gauana (36-13) will face Olathe North’s Taggart Murphy in the semifinals.

165: Maize freshman Everett Joyce (No. 2) registered a dominant 9-2 decision win over Junction City’s Cooper Bogenhagen (No. 6) to advance to the semifinals, where Joyce (21-2) will face Olathe North’s Trevor Vasquez (No. 3).

175: Maize senior Jayden Ford (No. 1) delivered a third-period pin over Washburn Rural’s Jadyn Baum (No. 6) to advance to his third straight state semifinal, where Ford (29-3) will face Olathe North’s Jacob Vasquez (No. 3).

190: Maize senior Ayden Flores (No. 1) needed a total of 85 seconds to reach his fourth straight semifinals. Flores (45-0), a defending state champion, will meet Wichita West junior Mencali Eli, who notched four takedowns and a reversal in a 10-6 decision over SM Northwest’s Gabriel Gast (No. 4), in the semifinals.

215: Derby senior Mason Hopper (No. 6) notched the upset of the day by handing Maize senior Ronan Wunsch (No. 1) his first loss of the season in the quarterfinals. Hopper trailed 3-0 entering the final period, but notched a reversal, escape and takedown to rally for a 5-4 decision victory. Hopper (24-8) will face Lawrence Free State’s Blaine Larkin in the semifinals.

285: Derby junior Milan Colvin (No. 2) advanced to his third straight state semifinals on an injury forfeit, as Colvin (10-1) will face Olathe South’s Jayden Berry (No. 5).

Class 5A boys results

106: Goddard freshman Oscar Gauna (No. 2) notched a first-round pin over Andover’s John Martinez-Goodman to advance to the semifinals, where Gauna (35-5) will face Spring Hill’s Brock Slimmer (No. 4). In the other semifinal, Hutchinson freshman Cruz Cannon (No. 3) will face Basehor-Linwood’s Trevor Christenson (No.1) after Cannon (32-12) won a 7-5 decision over Andover Central’s Ethan Worthington.

113: Bishop Carroll freshman Jackson Hermann advanced to the semifinals after top-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas junior Caden Gallet had to forfeit due to injury. Hermann (29-10) will face Valley Center junior Braxton Moody (No. 5) in the semifinals after Moody (30-8) notched a first-round pin over Emporia’s Gabe Wassom (No. 6). In the other semifinal, Arkansas City sophomore Kolby Quint (No. 2) will face Basehor-Linwood’s Jet Millson (No. 4).

120: Bishop Carroll freshman Connor Landers (No. 5) won a 7-2 decision over Lansing’s Sawyer Jorgensen (No. 3) to advance to the semifinals, where he will meet Valley Center junior Aiden Shields (No. 2) after Shields notched a first-period pin over Aquinas’ Shane Gifford. In the other semifinal, defending state champion Lucas Kaufman (38-3) of Newton and Goddard sophomore Harrison Glover (27-11) will meet after both advanced on pins in the quarterfinals.

126: Goddard sophomore Kolton McElwain (No. 5) won a 7-3 decision over Andover senior Coulter Rieschick (No. 2) to advance to the semifinals, where McElwain (16-6) will face Emporia’s Isaiah Morales.

132: Bishop Carroll sophomore Owen Newell (No. 4) rallied from a 10-5 deficit entering the final period against Great Ben’s Kaiden Hoffman (No. 5) to force overtime, where he won on a takedown. Newell (29-8) will face St. James’ Will Burchard (No. 2) in his first career semifinal. Meanwhile, Andover junior Luke Potter (No. 1) also advanced to his first semifinal, where he will face Basehor-Linwood’s Evan Vielhauer (No. 3), after a 5-0 decision over Salina Central’s Julian Glover (No. 6).

138: Defending state champion Adam Maki (47-3) of Andover advanced with a 17-2 technical fall over Newton’s Nate Barron (No. 6) and will face Shawnee Heights’ Andrew Bonebrake (No. 4) in the semifinals. Maize South freshman Joshua Kerr (No. 2) won a 7-1 decision over Great Bend’s Hayden Kelly (No. 5) to advance to the other semifinals, where Kerr (38-12) will face Bonner Springs’ Treyton Marquez.

144: Newton senior Bailey Steinmetz (No. 4) notched a 9-4 decision over Eisenhower’s Braedyn Blasi (No. 5) to advance to his first semifinal, where Steinmetz (30-7) will face Aquinas’ Kaden Allen (No. 2).

150: Defending state champion Jacob Goodwin (21-3) of Goddard notched a first-period pin over Salina Central’s Abram Owings (No. 4) to advance to the semifinals, where he will face De Soto’s Casey Bowlin.

157: Bishop Carroll junior Elijah Means (No. 6) won a 14-3 major decision over Topeka Seaman’s Gabe Brannick to advance to his first semifinals, where Means (35-7) will face Andover senior Bradley Trimmell (50-6) after Trimmell won an 11-4 decision over Goddard’s Eastyn Vieyra (No. 3). In the other semifinal, Hutchinson junior Kade Smith (No. 2) will face Great Bend’s Jace Schartz (No. 1).

165: Newton senior Keon Edwards (No. 3) notched a first-period takedown that was enough in a 3-2 decision over Bishop Carroll’s Luke Arredondo to advance to his second straight semifinals, where Edwards (36-11) will face top-ranked Aquinas senior Luke Hancock (33-9). Meanwhile, Goddard junior David Sample (No. 2) won a 19-2 technical fall over Topeka Seaman’s Samson Tootle to advance to his second straight semifinal to face Basehor-Linwood’s Tucker Hutchison.

175: Top-ranked Goddard senior Zachary Wessley (15-1) suffered his first loss of the season in the quarterfinals in a second-period pin by Hays’ Jonathan Rigler. Wessley won a state title as a freshman and was runner-up at 157 last year.

190: Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Omari Elias (No. 1) won an 11-3 major decision over Valley Center’s Steel Schomaker (No. 5) to advance to his first career semifinal, where Elias (38-1) will face Andover junior Tate Hutchinson (No. 3) after Hutchinson (42-8) won by first-period pin over Blue Valley Southwest’s Jaelyn Sides to advance to his first semifinal. In the other semifinal, Goddard junior Preston Hagel (No. 2) rallied in the third period for a 9-6 decision over Great Bend’s Trenton Kern (No. 4) to punch his ticket to his first career semifinal, where he will face Lansing’s Noah Mathis (No. 6).

215: Valley Center senior Dai’Mont Mucker (No. 1) won a 13-2 major decision over Newton’s Marcel Gonzalez (No. 6) to advance to his second straight semifinal, where Mucker (23-2) will face Eisenhower junior Lucas Freeman after an unranked Freeman (29-9) notched two straight upsets, including a thrilling, three-overtime 5-2 win over Aquinas’ Pierce Cunningham (No. 3).

285: Hutchinson senior Camden Jensen (No. 3) scored the winning takedown in the third period of a 3-2 decision over Newton’s Logan Buchanan (No. 2) to advance to his first career semifinal, where Jensen (34-6) will face Shawnee Heights’ Rykan Carver (No. 5). Top-ranked Andover Central junior Dawson Rodd (31-4) lost a heartbreaking, last-second 3-2 decision to Emporia’s Josiah Bradley (No. 4) in the quarterfinals.

Class 4A boys results

106: Rose Hill junior Samson Whitted (No. 1) won a 6-0 decision over Santa Fe Trail’s Tanner Sleichter to advance to his first career semifinal, where he will face Clay Center’s Thayne Pfizenmaier (No. 3).

113: Rose Hill junior Trenton Richwine (No. 3) notched a second-period pin over Independence’s Mason Gibbons (No. 4) to advance to his first career semifinal, where he will face Colby’s Ryder Dempewolf (No. 2).

120: Rose Hill sophomore Sebastian Bentley (No. 3) needed just 18 seconds for a pin over Santa Fe Trail’s Bryce Combes to advance to his first career semifinal, where he will face Colby’s Kaeden McCarty (No. 2).

126: Winfield junior Talon Suttles (No. 3) won a 13-2 major decision over Tonganoxie’s Clayton Crookham to advance to his first career semifinal, where he will face Paola’s Brock Johnson (No. 1). Meanwhile, Rose Hill junior Adam Bilby (No. 2) won a 13-2 major decision over Jefferson West’s Karons Kahler to advance to his third straight semifinal, where he will face Abilene’s Murphy Randolph (No. 6).

132: Rose Hill junior Johnny Leck (No. 1) notched two straight first-period pins to advance to his third straight semifinals, as the former state champion will face Clay Center’s Morgan Brumfield (No. 4). Winfield junior Owen Suttles (No. 2) notched an escape in overtime to prevail over Paola’s Hagen Blanck and advance to his second straight semifinal, where he will face Colby’s Tucker Wark (No. 3).

138: Rose Hill junior Damon Ingram (No. 1) won a 14-0 major decision over Wamego’s Knox Karnowski for his second straight semifinal appearance, as he will face Ulysses’ Jaxsen Salinas (No. 5).

144: Buhler junior Cruz Hershberger (No. 2) pinned Holton’s Cale Hein in the third period to advance to the semifinals, where he will face Ulysses’ Braysen Salinas (No. 3).

157: Three-time defending state champion Owen Eck (No. 1) of Andale kept his four-peat chances alive with a first-period pin over Frontenac’s Wyatt Frazier. Eck (25-1) will face McPherson senior Hayden Farley (No. 4) after Farley advanced to his first career semifinal with a pin over Silver Lake’s Blake Redmond (No. 6).

175: Andale senior Ian Aouad (No. 3) won a 17-10 decision over Chanute’s Cade Small (No. 5) to advance to his third straight semifinal, where he will face Ottawa’s Parker Guge (No. 2).

190: Andale junior Isaiah Wilson (No. 4) won with an overtime takedown on Tonganoxie’s Colton Brusven (No. 3) to advance to his second straight semifinal, where he will face Clay Center’s Tucker Jackson (No. 2).

215: Rose Hill junior Cole Rogers (No. 1) lost a heartbreaking 6-5 decision in overtime, as a last-second escape forced the extra period but Holton’s Dalton Roush (No. 6) won on a penalty and escape in the third overtime.

285: Augusta junior Willy Jon Morales (No. 1) notched two straight first-period pins to advance to his third straight semifinal, where he will face Fort Scott’s Jaden Garcia (No. 5).

Class 3-1A boys results

120: Bluestem freshman Axton Vice (No. 4) won a 17-6 major decision over WaKeeney-Trego’s Ashton Wynn to advance to the semifinals, where he will face Minneapolis’ Chase Johnson (No. 2).

144: Haven senior Dustin Loughrie (No. 3) won a 3-1 decision over Phillipsburg’s Seth Keeten (No. 4) to advance to the semifinals, where he will face Norton’s Brennen Pfannenstiel (No. 2).

165: West Elk junior Creyo Koop (No. 1) notched two straight first-period pins to advance to his third straight semifinal, where he will face Republic County’s Alex Dyke (No. 4).

175: Garden Plain senior Gage Lee (No. 2) registered two straight pins to advance to his first career semifinal, where he will face Atchison County’s Elijah Webb.

190: Douglass freshman Carter Green (No. 2) needed less than two minutes in his two matches to advance to the semifinals, where he will face Smith Center’s Luke Franklin (No. 5).

Class 6-5A girls results

100: Wichita Southeast senior TaNayaih Hunt (No. 5) pinned Wichita Northwest’s Tiana Murphy in the first period to advance to the semifinals, where Hunt (34-5) will face Liberal’s Keirsie Carlile (No. 4).

105: Derby senior and two-time state champion Amara Ehsa (No. 3) won a 6-0 decision over Basehor-Linwood’s Miley Locke to advance to the semifinals, where Ehsa (29-4) will face Newton freshman Brookelyn Treaster (No. 2) after Treaster (25-8) pinned SM Northwest’s Calla Hardison in the second period.

110: Newton sophomore Avery Hinojos (No. 2) notched a first-period pin over Great Bend’s Keira Leyva to advance to the semifinals, where she will face Garden City’s Marina Loera (No. 3).

115: Maize senior Anissa Robinson (No. 5) notched a first-period pin over Basehor-Linwood’s Karla Barrios to advance to the semifinals, where Robinson (30-3) will face Junction City’s Juliana Villaneuva (No. 1).

135: Bishop Carroll junior Alexis Means (No. 3) won a 12-1 major decision over Washburn Rural’s Laiken Clark (No. 5) to advance to the semifinals, where Means (33-3) will face Olathe North defending state champion Kaylan Hitchcock (No. 1).

140: Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Jayla Johnson (No. 2) registered a second-period pin over Garden City’s Amayah Caro to advance to her second straight semifinal, where Johnson (29-3) will face Olathe Northwest’s Hailey Arthur (No. 6).

155: Derby freshman Veronica Madrid (No. 2) pinned two straight opponents to advance to the semifinals, where Madrid (33-1) will face Olathe South’s Justice Thomas.

170: Wichita North sophomore Aariyah Jackson (No. 6) rallied in the third period for a 6-4 decision over Leavenworth’s Jacqueline Goodman (No. 3) to advance to the semifinals, where Jackson (38-4) will face Olathe Northwest’s Chloe Harris (No. 1).

235: Maize South senior Meya Howell (No. 3) pinned Shawnee Heights’ Theo Ofuasia (No. 6) in the first period to advance to her third straight semifinal, where Howell (22-1) will face Olathe North’s Hailey Conley (No. 1). In the other semifinal, Derby senior Trinity Williams (No. 2) won a 3-2 decision over Leavenworth’s Saryja Nelson to advance to her second straight semifinal, where Williams (20-0) will face Garden City’s Karen Rodriguez.

Class 4-1A girls results

100: El Dorado senior Trinity Motter (No. 5) won a 4-2 decision over Colby’s Aspen Sharpe to advance to her second straight semifinal, where Motter (30-6) will face Abilene’s Charlie Elliott (No. 1). Meanwhile, Winfield defending state champion senior Sheena Gocela (No. 2) needed just 45 seconds to pin Stockton’s Carolina Northup to advance to her fourth straight semifinal, where Gocela (28-3) will face Circle freshman Alexis Wall (No. 4) after Wall (24-3) pinned Fort Scott’s Caellen Wescoat (No. 6) in the third period.

120: Mulvane junior Leiannah Landreth (No. 2) pinned two straight opponents to advance to her third straight semifinal, where Landreth (35-2) will face Chanute’s Kadynce Axelson (No. 3).

125: Augusta senior Jill High (No. 2) won a 10-1 major decision over Stockton’s Ashlyn Hahn (No. 4) to advance to her third straight semifinal, where High (32-2) will face Rock Creek’s Brooklyn Burenheide (No. 3).

130: Halstead freshman Callyn Divine (No. 2) pinned two straight opponents to advance to the semifinals, where Divine (39-0) will face Hoisington’s Daijah Jones (No. 3).

140: Eureka senior Lyndsey Escareno (No. 4) notched two straight first-period pins to advance to her third straight semifinal, where Escareno (23-5) will face Goodland’s Destiny Gonzalez (No. 3).

155: Haven junior Trista Rogers (No. 4) won a 3-2 decision over Marysville’s Rosa Latta (No. 5) to advance to the semifinals, where Rogers (35-6) will face Oakley’s Cali Wagoner (No. 1).

190: Winfield sophomore Abby Brenn (No. 2) won a 5-1 decision over Burlington’s Johanna Carrasco (No. 6) to advance to the semifinals, where Brenn (32-1) will face Girard’s Kara Pope. Meanwhile, Wellington senior Aubrey Hunt (No. 2) won in overtime against Baldwin’s Elle Pittman-Wood (No. 4) to advance to the other semifinal, where Hunt (31-3) will face Oakley’s Brooke Smith.

235: McPherson junior Ciara Rawson (No. 2) needed a total of 66 seconds to pin two opponents to advance to her second career semifinal, where Rawson (25-5) will face Prairie View’s Whitley Cox-Halliburton (No. 6). Meanwhile, El Dorado senior Cheyenne Jones pinned two straight opponents, including over Hill City’s Grace Penrod (No. 5), to advance to the semifinals where Jones (18-5) will face Paola’s Kena Leonard (No. 1).
