Kansas men's basketball hosts West Virginia. Jayhawks roll to another Big 12 win

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self shares his thoughts on defending team’s national title

LAWRENCE — Kansas men's basketball's 2021-22 regular season continued Saturday with a Big 12 Conference matchup at home against West Virginia.

The Jayhawks came in off of a win against Iowa State. The Mountaineers came in off of a win against Oklahoma State. This was the first time the two sides have faced off this season.

Did David McCormack rebound from what's been an inconsistent season to date with a noteworthy game? Did Remy Martin make his return from injury? How did Kansas head coach Bill Self's squad do in another conference home game?

Here's what happened, with the latest news first, at Allen Fieldhouse:

FINAL: Kansas 85, West Virginia 59

Kansas leads 77-57 against West Virginia with 3:28 left in 2nd half

The Jayhawks are up 20 points, and it seems like they're leading by even more than that. Jalen Wilson has 23 points. David McCormack has 19 points and 15 rebounds. Ochai Agbaji has 20 points. While Kansas is without Remy Martin right now, it's certainly not playing like that anymore.

Kansas leads 64-50 against West Virginia with 7:33 left in 2nd half

Jalen Wilson is now up to 18 points, which ties for the team lead for Kansas and all scorers. He's 8-for-10 from the field and 2-for-4 from behind the arc. This has been the best he's played all season, collectively.

West Virginia hasn't been able to take advantage of its production from the free-throw line. The Mountaineers may be 18-for-20 and the Jayhawks 2-for-6, but it's a 14-point game.

Kansas leads 57-40 against West Virginia with 11:26 left in 2nd half

The Jayhawks are up 17 points now with about 11 and a half minutes left. Ochai Agbaji has clearly been the leading reason as to why, but Jalen Wilson's performance so far shouldn't be overlooked. Wilson has 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Kansas leads 42-31 against West Virginia with 16:26 left in 2nd half

The Jayhawks are on a 9-0 run to start the second half, and are up by 11 points now with about 16 and a half minutes left. This is the largest lead Kansas has had so far in this game. Both David McCormack and Ochai Agbaji have 13 points to lead the Jayhawks.

HALFTIME: Kansas 33, West Virginia 31

Kansas leads 31-29 against West Virginia with 1:39 left in 1st half

The Jayhawks have taken the lead back with a 7-0 run, and are up two points with about a minute in a half left in the first half. West Virginia hasn't scored in about two and a half minutes. For Kansas, Ochai Agbaji is up to 10 points and he's 2-for-3 from behind the arc.

West Virginia leads 29-26 against Kansas with 3:43 left in 1st half

Each side has gone deep into its bench already in this one. Both sides have played 10 guys. For Kansas, that's meant Joseph Yesufu, Mitch Lightfoot, Jalen Coleman-Lands, Bobby Pettiford and KJ Adams Jr. have all seen playing time at different points. Of those five, one could argue Yesufu has played the best.

West Virginia leads 25-19 against Kansas with 6:27 left in 1st half

Kansas has called another timeout, trailing by six points with about six and a half minutes left. The issue so far, for the Jayhawks, has clearly been on the offensive end. Without Remy Martin, they appear to be missing the speed and energy that can be so valuable against a defense like the Mountaineers'.

West Virginia leads 23-19 against Kansas with 7:48 left in 1st half

The Mountaineers haven't made a shot in more than four minutes, but still have the lead in this one. One area of the game that's certainly helped, is West Virginia going 10-for-11 from the free-throw line so far and Kansas being just 1-for-1. Kansas is shooting a lot better from the field still, 42.1 percent compared to 26.3 percent.

West Virginia leads 20-14 against Kansas with 10:49 left in 1st half

The Jayhawks' scoring drought is now more than three minutes long as they're turning the ball over at a rate they just weren't earlier in the contest. West Virginia has five points off of four Kansas turnovers. Kansas has two points off of two West Virginia turnovers.

West Virginia leads 15-14 against Kansas with 11:58 left in 1st half

The Jayhawks are on a scoring drought that's lasted more than two minutes now, and are trailing with about 12 minutes to go before halftime. Kansas is shooting 50 percent from the field, and West Virginia only about 29 percent, but Bill Self's squad is still trailing. Ochai Agbaji is only 1-for-4 from the field at this point for the Jayhawks.

Kansas leads 11-8 against West Virginia with 14:19 left in 1st half

The Jayhawks have the early lead, and are up three points with about 14 minutes left in the first half. Jalen Wilson leads Kansas and all scorers. He has five points.

The Jayhawks have looked like the better squad so far, but don't seem to be winning as many loose ball situations as they should. They also don't seem to be winning when it comes to rebounding, either.
