Kansas monument found broken along hiking trail near Wamego

WAMEGO (KSNT) – A historical monument on a hiking trail near Wamego was found destroyed earlier this month.

Michael Stubbs with the Mount Mitchell Prairie Guards said in a social media post that hikers found the nine-foot monument broken in three large pieces on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The monument was built back in 1956 to honor Kansas colonists and abolitionists.

The limestone monolith can be found at the summit of the Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie trail. The deconstructed center and base of the monument can still be found on the Wamego trail.

Stubbs said the bronze plaque from the fallen monument has been salvaged and is set to be incorporated on a brand new monument that will honor donors and Kansas pioneers.

The deconstructed center and base of the monument can still be found on the Wamego trail.
