Kansas State coach Jerome Tang turned to the transfer portal for some veteran backcourt help Tuesday, landing a commitment from Arkansas State guard Desi Sills.

Sills, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior, from Jonesboro, Arkansas, averaged 12.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists in his only season at Arkansas State, helping the Red Wolves to an 18-11 record in 2021-22. He spent his first three years at Arkansas.

Sills announced his commitment on social media with the words "Can I think out loud? Can I tell myself I’m proud? 1000% committed," accompanied by a graphic.

The addition of Sills gives Tang nine players on his first Wildcat roster with four openings remaining. Senior point guard Markquis Nowell and junior forward Ismael Massoud are the only players remaining from former coach Bruce Weber's 2021-22 team.

Sills is by far the most experienced of the four players to join the Wildcats through the transfer portal. He started 27 games at Arkansas State and appeared in all 98 games for Arkansas the three years before that.

His most productive season at Arkansas came as a sophomore in 2019-20, when he averaged 10.6 points. He averaged 7.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 32 games with 15 starts as a junior on a 25-7 Razorback team that advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.

That 2020-21 Arkansas team lost in the Elite Eight to a national championship Baylor team, where Tang was associate head coach under Scott Drew.

Sills should compete for significant playing time alongside Nowell, who averaged 12.4 points and was among the Big 12 leaders with 5.0 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The other two guards on the roster are 6-5 sophomore transfer Cam Carter from Mississippi State and 6-5 New Orleans high school standout Dorian Finister.

Joining Massoud in the frontcourt are LSU sophomore transfer Jerrell Colbert, 6-8 Virginia Tech transfer David N'Guessan, Chipola (Florida) junior college transfer Nae'Qwan Tomlin and high school signee Taj Manning.
