Kanye's Donda Academy Has Been Shut Down, Effective Immediately

Kanye West can add one more thing to his string of continuous unfortunate events. His private Christian school, Donda Academy, has closed. According to The Times, parents received an email announcing the closure on Wednesday night. Assistant Principal Jason Angell sent the email informing parents about the closure, which was “effective immediately.”

Angell’s email read: “Dear Donda Academy Families — We hope this email finds you well. First we would like to express our gratitude for the community of families and scholars that Donda Academy brought together. However, at the direction of our Founder, Donda Academy will close for the remainder of the 2022-2023 school year effective immediately, Thursday, October 27. THERE IS NO SCHOOL TOMORROW.”

You can imagine the shock the parents had when receiving the notice.

The email continued, “Our leadership team will be working diligently to assist all families during this transition, ensuring that every scholar has what they need to succeed in their next community in a prompt and gracious manner.”

@HollywoodUnlocked shared a post containing the email sent to the families.

Angell claims the school plans to “begin afresh” in September 2023. However, there seem to be no clear plans or direction for what students are to do for the remainder of the school year.

Named after the rapper’s late mother, Donda West, Donda Academy is located in a secret location in Simi Valley.

According to The Times, there are about 100 students enrolled at the academy. The academy lists 13 full-time teachers on its roster.

Like its proprietor, the academy has been under fire for some time.

According to AfroTech, the academy charges $15,000 a year for tuition. Families are also made to sign nondisclosure agreements to prevent leaks.

The school is also not accredited. With the lack of accreditation, graduating seniors risked not having their credits or diplomas recognized by colleges.

The academy’s website claims that there was a 10-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and children attending the school “learn fundamentals, grow in their faith, and experience two enrichment classes.”

Previously, West spoke with Good Morning America about the academy and how the school’s aim was to “spread the gospel.”

Although the rapper had intentions of providing a sound education, the academy had a rocky foundation from the start.

Blavity previously reported that the school received criticism after pictures leaked of the students eating lunch in what looked to be a warehouse.

The academy closing is just another blow to Ye’s crumbling empire.

The rapper, now known as Ye, has allegedly lost his billionaire status by losing contracts associated with his Yeezy brand, as reported by Blavity.

The downward spiral for Kanye began when he made antisemitic comments about “going death con 3 on Jewish people.”

Donda Academy has not released a statement regarding tuition or reimbursement for the remainder of the school year.
