Here’s What Karamo From 'Queer Eye' Really Thinks About His "Culture" Title
Queer Eye star Karamo shared insight into being the "Culture" expert.
The 38-year-old life coach and self-help author confessed that his title on the Netflix hit reality show confused fans in the beginning.
On July 19, Queer Eye returned to Netflix with Season 4.
Karamo Brown completes Queer Eye’s Fab Five with his uplifting pep talks, genuine positivity, and incredible ability to help individuals understand the importance of self-reflection. It goes without saying that Queer Eye fans were counting down the days until Netflix premiered Season 4 of the beloved reality show, and with Season 5 already in the works, viewers are definitely having a gorgeous day.
But as with most beginnings, the start of an unknown path had its difficulties, and Karamo found himself facing a different challenge than the rest of his fabulous costars. The gang was brought together thanks to their particular talents, and the 38-year-old soon realized that his “Culture” title would take some getting used to.
“I think my title was misleading for people during Seasons 1 and 2,” Karamo tells HouseBeautiful.com. “Having the title ‘Culture,’ people didn't really understand what it was. When they had ‘Grooming’ and ‘Fashion’ experts, they understood what that meant.”

Karamo’s co-stars—Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, and Bobby Berk—all contribute essential skills to help transform a person’s entire life in a matter of days, and the experience is rounded out by understanding what exists at the core, the part that no one else can see.
“People were confused and didn’t understand that my job was to fix the inside—fix the heart and mind,” he shares with us while kicking off his partnership with HomeGoods. “It’s great when you have a transformation on the outside, but if you don’t fix what’s on the inside, then the transformation on the outside will never last.”
He continued: “Sometimes we just get caught up on the outside, and what I love about Queer Eye is that it shows that you can fix the outside, but it’s also about focusing on what got you to that place. As we’ve gone through the seasons, people have started to identify with that more, versus being confused by the title.”

When asked about the eight nominated individuals and whose episode he’s the most excited to see, he compares it to asking a parent to pick their favorite child. “They all hold a special place in my heart,” he says. “Anytime I see somebody have emotional growth or become more honest about what they’re feeling and start to make positive changes in their lives, it’s so important.”
“Each one is different, and I’m just excited for the world to see every single one of them," Karamo finished with. "As a group, we just keep getting better each season.”
