Kareem Hunt wants new contract, staying out of Browns' team drills

Aug. 6—Running back Kareem Hunt is staying out of team drills in Browns training camp because he wants a new contract.

Josina Anderson of CBSSportsHQ was first to report the story.

Hunt is in the final year of a two-year extension he signed in 2020. Hunt said during his football camp at Willoughby South that he wanted a new contract.

"Right now I'm just taking it day by day," Hunt said in June. "I'm going to see what they want to do with me. I'm just taking it day by day. Hopefully I can be here long term.

"I was born and raised here. I'd love to finish my career here and just keep playing the game with (Nick) Chubb longer and with the great guys on this great team."

Hunt wants to be traded if he does not get the new contract, but his preference is to stay with the Browns.

Hunt missed nine games with injuries last season. He was limited to 78 carries for 386 yards yet still scored five touchdowns. He carried 198 times for 841 yards and six touchdowns in 2020.

Hunt is participating in individual drills during his semi-holdout.

Hunt could not be reached for comment. He is making $1.35 million this season. Chubb signed a contract extension last summer. He is making $1.2 million in 2022. His contract jumps to $10.8 million next season.
