Tyler Karen threw five touchdown passes Saturday afternoon to help lead the Victor Valley College football team to a 38-34 victory over LA Valley College.

The Granite Hills quarterback completed nine passes for 294 yards and immediately helped put the Rams on the board.

The Rams forced LA Valley to punt on the opening drive, leading to Karen connecting with Juan Gutierrez, a Serrano graduate, for a 62-yard touchdown pass for a quick 7-0 lead.

LA Valley fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Tyrelle Butler, also a Serrano graduate, recovered the ball. Another Serrano graduate, Carlos Garcia, nailed a 42-yard field goal to up the lead 10-0.

But the Rams went scoreless for most of the first half, and LA Valley tied the score until Karen hit Holden Eames for a 60-yard touchdown pass for a seven-point lead.

It took just 18 seconds for VVC to score another touchdown.

LA Valley fumbled on the kickoff and Xzavier White recovered the ball, and an unsportsmanlike penalty set the Rams 23 yards from the end zone.

Karen and Gabe Trujillo, a Victor Valley graduate, connected for a 23-yard touchdown and a 24-10 lead with 3:26 left in the first half.

The Rams scored on the first drive of the second half as Adelanto graduate Hosia Stokes took a pass from Karen 68 yards for a touchdown and a 31-16 lead.

Karen’s fifth touchdown came midway through the third quarter. He connected with Eames again, this time for 47 yards, giving the Rams a 38-16 lead.

LA Valley rallied for 18 unanswered points to pull within four. LA Valley drove the ball up to the Rams’ 25 yard line as time expired.

Victor Valley College improves to 2-3 on the season and is on a bye week, before returning home against Compton College on Oct. 15.
