White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield claimed Friday that President Joe Biden "never shies away from taking questions" from the media despite the president's refusal to answer questions since the fall of Kabul last Sunday.

After pointing out that Biden has not taken direct questions from the White House press corps about the chaos in Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover, MSNBC's John Heilemann asked the Biden administration spokeswoman whether the president would take questions following Friday afternoon's scheduled remarks.

"The president never shies away from taking questions. I'll let him make a decision if he's going to take questions this afternoon, but you saw he just did a full sit-down interview on this just yesterday, so he is always willing to take questions," Bedingfield said during a Friday appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe.

Biden participated in a sit-down interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos that aired Wednesday, during which the commander in chief defended his administration's rushed exit from Afghanistan despite the human toll as chaos engulfs the Kabul airport.

The president has received criticism from members of the media and Republican politicians for his failure to take questions following his Sunday speech about the fall of Afghanistan.

Biden received criticism over the same issue on Wednesday when he delivered an address regarding the uptick of delta variant cases in the United States, departing the press room amid "audible scoffs from some in the press pool," according to Fox News's Jacqui Heinrich.

"Wait!!! Timeout!!!! Did @POTUS leave without taking questions again?!?!? This isn't incompetent leadership... This is no leadership!!!!" Republican Florida Rep. Byron Donalds tweeted Wednesday.

CNN Political Director David Chalian also pointed out that Biden has been "getting better" about avoiding the press following speeches.

"President Biden seems to be getting better at leaving the room without taking reporters' questions at precisely the moment he has many many questions to answer," Chalian tweeted that same day.

Sen. Tom Cotton said it was "alarming" that neither Biden nor Vice President Kamala Harris "has the capacity to answer questions during a major foreign policy crisis of their own creation."

"For 50 years, Joe Biden has imagined himself as a grandmaster strategist who is smarter and understands the world better than everyone else," he continued. "Now, he's shellshocked as he realizes he is incompetent, impotent, and can't answer questions without a script."

Biden is expected to deliver a second address to the nation on Friday about the situation in Afghanistan, which fell to the hands of the Taliban on Sunday after deposed Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country amid the planned U.S. military withdrawal.

Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.
