Kate Middleton Recycles an Alexander McQueen Dress for First Ever Earthshot Prize Awards
Just three weeks ago, the Duchess of Cambridge dazzled in a show-stopping gold dress on the red carpet. And tonight, she has made another standout appearance, this time on a green carpet in a recycled outfit.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have arrived for the first awards ceremony for his Earthshot Prize, which champions solutions to protect the planet. Kate chose an Alexander McQueen dress for the occasion that she previously wore in 2011 to a BAFTA event during her first ever royal tour of Canada and the U.S. Her choice was in-keeping with the ethos of the event, for which guests were expected to wear, or re-wear, outfits with sustainability in mind.
The royals are joined at north London’s Alexandra Palace this evening by stars including Emma Thompson and Emma Watson as well as climate campaigners and activists. Tonight, five winners will be chosen from a shortlist of 15 solutions to help repair the planet, with each winner receiving £1 million to scale up their innovation.
The awards ceremony has been specially designed to be sustainable, with no guests flown in just for the evening, a paperless policy as well as plant-based canapés. Speaking ahead of the event, Prince Charles praised his son for creating the awards, saying he was “very proud.”
“As a world, we need to come together to inspire, reimagine and build the sustainable future we so desperately need.“Over the coming decade, with future generations in mind, The Earthshot Prize, and its inspirational nominees, will help us find the innovative solutions,” Charles said. “In parallel, through my Terra Carta and Sustainable Markets Initiative, we will work to mobilize the trillions of dollars required to transition the global economy onto a more sustainable trajectory.”

During the ceremony, a short film recorded in the London Eye will be played, in which Prince William says, “We are alive in the most consequential time in human history... The actions we choose or choose not to take in the next ten years will determine the fate of the planet for the next thousand. A decade doesn’t seem long, but humankind has an outstanding record of being able to solve the unsolvable.
“Many of the answers are already out there... but we need everyone—from all parts of society—to raise their ambition and unite in repairing our planet. The future is ours to determine. And if we set our minds to it, nothing is impossible.”
The ceremony will feature performances from artists Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, KSI and Yemi Alade, and Shawn Mendes. Coldplay’s performance, from outside of Alexandra Palace, will use energy powered by 60 cyclists. And it will be broadcast on BBC One (at 8 p.m.), BBC iPlayer, and globally on Discovery's Facebook page.
