Today, Kate Middleton attended the annual Royal Variety Performance alongside the likes of Robbie Williams and a slew of other celebrities—but she was hardly upstaged, thanks (in part) to a savvy sartorial choice.

The Duchess arrived at the event wearing a stunning Alexander McQueen gown, which featured sections of semi-sheer lace. Kate finished off the look with a blowout and her hoop earrings from Erdem.

Although a member of the royal family always makes an appearance at the Royal Variety Performance—a tradition since King George V and Queen Mary attended a first "royal performance in 1912—Prince William and Kate Middleton aren't always the designated attendees. (Thanks to that century-long continuity, it's the longest running entertainment show in the world, according to the Performance's website.)

Last year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle went to the show, and the Duchess wore a memorable custom look from Safiyaa for the occasion. It was Prince Harry's second time attending the performance, after he first made an appearance in 2015.

Will and Kate last attended in 2017. That year, Kate went all out in a semi-sheer blue gown, which featured sequins and beaded details, but it was Prince William who really made headlines. The royal stood up and mimicked a gallop for the audience, referencing a joke from host Miranda Hart's TV show Miranda.

"I did apologize to him at the end and he said he'd practice his galloping," Hart told reporters, per the Telegraph. "I thought he was wonderful in joining in. I forgot to get him to knight me with a lightsaber but maybe another time."
