This summer no shoe has proved more divisive as the flip flop heel. Championed by trend-conscious celebrities such as Kim Kardashian-West and Kendall Jenner, the style has been omnipresent on social media. Yesterday in New York City, Katie Holmes showed that the design can go the distance beyond Instagram. Spotted in Midtown, the actress casually wore several designer pieces under her oversized denim jacket: Altuzarra’s aptly named “Sunday dress,” and a Chanel vanity case. Elevated by the addition of tan mules with a thong strap, her outfit looked effortlessly chic and summery.

A minimalist interpretation of the style, Holmes’s sandals accented what could have been an ordinary outfit. High enough to provide added glamour, yet comfy enough to wear while running errands, they were the perfect complement to her look. While it remains to be seen if Holmes will test out Yeezy’s wildly popular clear version, her foray into trendy footwear proved you don’t have to be an influencer to give the flip flop heel a spin.
