“Honey, would you like some scrambled eggs this morning?”

When my mother called up these sweet words to my bedroom, it was music to my ears. Speaking of sweet. The main course always came with a side – toast with butter and honey.

No matter how hard I tried, I’ve never been able to recreate the taste and texture of eggs like mom used to make. So I’m content to boil two eggs, one for before church on Sunday, and one for Monday morning. Adding a couple slices of American Cheese sure helps. It’s my version of the Kraft Grilled Cheese commercial. I call it Omelette O’clock.

“Honey, would you like some unscrambled words this morning?”

When God says these words to me, it is sweet music to my ears. As I’ve written before, I’m a prolific dreamer. Hardly a night passes by when I don’t dream about someone, something or the other. This includes sermons, story lines, meditations and prayers.

But they don’t come out a finished product. They’re like cracking egg yolks into a frying pan. There’s a lot of untangling to do before they can be preached, meditated, prayed. and reflected on.

That’s where the Holy One enters in. With the light of Christ within, Spirit whispers and nudges, I simply sit down at the computer and let my fingers do the walking and talking. Then, after several drafts I’ve got living words, ready for action.

What I’m saying to you, my friends, scramblers and (un)scramblers alike is that our “Stillspeaking” God (as we say in the UCC) never stops speaking to our hearts, minds and souls. And if we’re more intentional about paying closer attention, whether it’s in the middle of the day or night, there’s a most important message that’s been waiting to be received, perhaps for the longest time.

Sometimes, while drifting to sleep I see words, highlighted by a soft, white glow. It’s one of the many reasons I keep my prayer journal nearby, to write down anything and everything that happens in my subconscious.

It all comes down to this single verse of scripture from our Life Source. ‘Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

It’s like God turning on the light switch and calling up the stairs saying, “Good morning! I’ve got the best spiritual food you’ve ever tasted for breakfast – scrambled words. Let’s spend time and unscramble them together!”
