Katt Williams, the veteran comedian and actor with a two-decades-plus career fueled by arena concerts, TV and film roles, is bringing his “2023 and Me” comedy tour to Daytona Beach.

The Aug. 25 show at the Ocean Center represents what could be the start of a new era of concerts at the Daytona Beach venue, after Volusia County Council members gave the green light this past spring to exploring potential opportunities to book live entertainment at the venue.

"I want us to bring concerts in,” Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower said at the council's April 4 meeting. “Not just for our locals. We want to bring people to Daytona, put heads in beds."

Although entertainment hasn't been a big part of the mix in recent years, there is a long list of iconic performers that have played the Ocean Center since its opening in 1985. The big names range from Elton John and Cher to George Jones and Frank Sinatra.

Williams' career ranges from stand-up to feature films

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Williams had established himself by the late 1990s as a popular fixture on the nation’s comedy circuit at stages such as The Improv, The Comedy Club and The Ice House as well as BET’s Comic View showcase. In 2006, he starred in his first HBO special, “The Pimp Chronicles, Pt. 1.”

Along the way, he also made the transition into film and TV acting, including his debut feature film role as Money Mike in the 2002 stoner comedy “Friday After Next.”

His list of credits also includes “Father Figures,” “Norbit,” “Scary Movie V,” “Epic Movie,” “The House Next Door: Meet the Blacks 2,” “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore,” “The Boondocks,” “Wild 'n Out” and a guest role in “Atlanta” that yielded Primetime Emmy Award.

In addition, Williams continued to star in well-received standup specials, most recently his latest Netflix show “Katt Williams: World War III.” Filmed in Las Vegas, it features his take on some of the most bizarre conspiracy theories out there on the web and in real-life.

Known for off-stage controversies, as well

Williams also is known for a long string of legal issues that has kept his name in the tabloids.

A short list of incidents compiled by the Los Angeles Times includes allegedly holding women who wanted a photo with him at gunpoint; an alleged fight onstage at a concert; an arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and false imprisonment as well as drug and weapons charges after a raid on his house in Georgia, all reported within a few months in 2016.

In that same period, Williams also was arrested in Atlanta and charged with battery after allegedly throwing a saltshaker at the manager of a local restaurant after the comedian’s group was denied special seating.
