Katy Perry has announced her departure from American Idol after seven seasons.

Appearing on last night's (February 12) episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the singer confirmed that the upcoming series of the reality show will be her last.

When asked by host Jimmy Kimmel how long she's likely to stay on the judging panel, Perry replied: "Well, you know, this fall, this September, I'm going to be doing this huge music festival in Brazil called Rock in Rio.

"It's really exciting. It's a big deal for people all over the world, especially my Brazilian fans. So I think this will probably be my last season for Idol."

Following shocked gasps from the audience, Perry continued: "I love Idol so much. It's connected me with the heart of America but I need to feel that pulse of my own beat."

When later asked what her fellow judges Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan thought about her decision to leave the show, Perry said: "Well, they'll find out tonight!"

The singer-songwriter took to Instagram following her appearance on the chat show to tease her exit from the series.

"Let's play two truths and a lie," she wrote. "1. I beat @usher at Monopoly Deal. 2. I'm headlining Rock in Rio this September. 3. This is my last season on @americanidol. Tune in to @jimmykimmellive to find out."

The couple will star in a three-part event this spring to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the beloved animated series.

American Idol's 22nd season debuts on February 18 on ABC. Peppa Pig Wedding Party Special will air in 2024.
