Watch: Trump 'not going away' as Republican leader

President Donald Trump’s White House press secretary railed against Georgia’s Republican governor during an interview with Fox News on Sunday morning after he failed to help the administration overturn the results of the 2020 elections.

Kayleigh McEnany appeared to pressure the governor on live television to “call in a special legislative session” ahead of the state’s senate elections next month, in which Republican incumbents David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler were facing challenges against Democratic nominees Raphael Wornock and Jon Ossoff.

“If we lose these two Senate seats, guess whose casting the deciding vote in this country for our government?” the White House press secretary said. “It will be Kamala Harris.”

Her comments followed explosive reports published during the weekend revealing how the president called the governor of Georgia for help in overturning President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the reliably-red state.

Mr Trump reportedly urged Governor Brian Kemp to convince the state legislature to overturn Mr Biden’s win and requested he mandate an audit of absentee ballot signatures.

According to the Washington Post, which cited an anonymous source, the governor refused to comply with the president’s request. More over, state law does not permit Mr Kemp to order an audit of mail ballot signatures.

Mr Biden’s victory in Georgia has already been certified. The president-elect won the state — which hasn’t gone to a Democratic presidential nominee since 1992 — by more than 12,000 votes.

The president has lambasted Mr Kemp in tweets and public statements after his electoral defea,t saying he was “ashamed” to have endorsed him during his gubernatorial bid. He has also slammed Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brad Raffensperber, as a “disaster”.

Mr Kemp has said he will not call for a special legislative session ahead of the elections scheduled for 5 January, 2021.
