Kaysville officer hospitalized after stopping wrong-way driver on I-15

KAYSVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — A Kaysville police officer was taken to the hospital with moderate to serious injuries early Friday morning, Feb. 9, after stopping a wrong-way driver with his patrol car on I-15.

Utah Highway Patrol said the crash happened just before 2 a.m. near mile marker 328 near the Farmington area. Davis County dispatch had put out a report of a wrong-way driver, traveling northbound in southbound lanes on I-15. The unidentified Kaysville officer responded to the call and began to enter the southbound ramp near 200 North.

UHP said the officer “immediately encountered” the wrong-way driver.

The Kaysville officer quickly crossed the dirt gore area between the on-ramp and I-15, crossed all lanes of the interstate and collided with the wrong-way Tesla to stop the driver, according to authorities.

“The officer’s vehicle was heavily damaged in the incident and he was extricated by medical personnel and transported to the hospital with moderate to serious injuries,” UHP said in a statement.

Kaysville PD Assistant Chief Seth Ellington confirmed with ABC4 the officer was treated at the hospital and has since been released. Ellington said he is now at home and “doing OK.”

The driver of the Tesla was not injured in the crash and was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. His identity has not been publicly released.

Southbound lanes of I-15 were closed for a couple of hours for an investigation into the crash and to clear the scene. Traffic was temporarily diverted off the 200 North off-ramp and back up on the on-ramp around the crash. The interstate was reopened around 4:30 a.m. the same day.
