KC Comets drop first home game this season. Here’s where they sit in the standings

The Kansas City Comets had their unbeaten run to start the Major Arena Soccer League season ended over the weekend in their doubleheader with the Texas Outlaws. The Comets stretched their winning streak to four games with a 9-7 road win on Saturday but fell 7-6 at home on Sunday.

The Comets were already without several key pieces and were facing a tough turnaround, giving Comets head coach Stefan Stokic the opportunity to test out the team’s depth. A total of four players made their Comets debuts over the two games.

Leo Acosta was among the standout first-timers, as the 21-year-old scored twice in Saturday’s road win at Mesquite Arena in Mesquite, Texas. The Comets were ahead for much of the contest, answering every time Texas came close with seven different scorers.

Goalkeeper Phillip Ejimadu also impressed in Sunday’s loss, making 19 saves in three quarters of work in his MASL debut. Texas was on the front foot for much of the early going but only had a level scoreline to show for it at halftime. The Outlaws’ second-half effort stymied a Comets squad that ran out of time, as the visitors scored three straight in the third period and held off a last-gasp effort from the Comets.

“We didn’t look good enough,” Stokic said. “The decision-making wasn’t good. The energy and fight was there, but unfortunately, when you play against teams like Texas, you have to have the quality as well.”

The Comets now sit in second place in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1 record, trailing the first-place Monterrey Flash by two points. While the 4-1 start to the season is a positive, the Comets are upset they missed the opportunity to begin 5-0.

“We’re not satisfied; we’ve got to be better,” said forward Zach Reget, who leads the league with 14 points and 10 goals following a six-point weekend. “You’re not supposed to lose at home. We did the hard part, winning away. We weren’t disciplined today, and that’s something we can’t do.”

After the Christmas holiday, the Comets will finish the calendar year with a two-game set against the St. Louis Ambush. Game 1 will be at Cable Dahmer Arena on December 28 before a New Year’s Eve matchup in St. Louis.
