KC Roos beat Denver in men’s basketball; women’s team falls to Pioneers on road

The Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team picked up its second consecutive win on Thursday to return to .500 in Summit League competition.

The Roos (10-13, 4-4 Summit League) beat the Denver Pioneers (13-10, 4-4) 85-71 at the Swinney Center.

Tyler Andrews led the Roos with a career-high 25 points on 50% shooting. Jamar Brown was close behind with 23 points.

Touko Tainamo paced the Pioneers with 19.

The Roos held the lead for the majority of the contest and entered halftime up 45-37. Kansas City capitalized on Denver’s miscues, turning 18 Pioneer giveaways into 20 points.

Next up, the Roos close out a three-game homestand against St. Thomas (14-9, 4-4 Summit) on Saturday. Tipoff at Swinney is set for 7 p.m.

Women: Denver 70, KC Roos 65

The Roos are still searching for their first league road win of the year after losing at Denver Thursday night.

The Roos (10-13, 1-7 Summit League) got 13 points from Alayna Contreras and eight rebounds from Ifunanya Nwachukwu.

Jordan Jones led all scorers with 20 points for Denver (5-16, 2-6 Summit) on 50% shooting. Teammate Makayla Minett recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Roos led 30-28 at halftime. But the Pioneers finished the evening with 19 points off 14 Roos turnovers. Denver outscored KC 21-9 in the final quarter, and that was the difference in the game.

The Roos will look to snap a two-game skid on Saturday at St. Thomas (13-9). Tipoff is set for noon at Schoenecker Arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
