Feb. 14 could be a busy day in Kansas City if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl on Sunday.

If that happens, the team will, per tradition, host a parade to celebrate with their fans in Kansas City. A date has not been confirmed, but recent history points to the parade being on the Wednesday following the game.

That would be Feb. 14, which is also Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday.

Here’s what to know about the Super Bowl Parade, Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday.

Timing of Super Bowl parade

Super Bowl parades in Kansas City have followed a distinct pattern in recent years.

In 2020, following the team’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Feb. 2, the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade marched through Grand Boulevard to Union Station the following Wednesday, on Feb. 5.

In 2023, when the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 12, their parade similarly took to the streets on the following Wednesday, Feb. 15.

That’s why it seems that if Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones and the rest of the team win, you could see the parade happen on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The Kansas City Sports Commission typically releases official plans sometime after the game — if the Chiefs win.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is always on Feb. 14. While it is not an official holiday, people traditionally celebrate the day with their loved ones.

It is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants in Kansas City, since they see a lot of couples book reservations for a special date night.

Rockhill Grille, 2000 Grand Blvd., which is also located on the potential parade route, said they have over 130 reservations for their restaurant on Valentine’s Day.

Grünauer general manager Scott Beskow said the Austrian restaurant at 101 W. 22nd St. has over 200 people booked for reservations on the day. and a representative with Novel Restaurant, 1927 McGee St., said they have over 150 reservations booked.

All of these restaurants plan to be open on Valentine’s Day even if the parade happens.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is celebrated followers of several religions, including Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists and Nazarenes.

The religious holiday kicks off the Lenten season and serves as a reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.

The start of 2024’s Lenten season is also on Feb. 14. It follows Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, and is a time where, among other things, people do not eat meat on Fridays and give up something for 40 days — commemorating the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting in the desert.

Those who honor Ash Wednesday will have ashes in the shape of a cross on their foreheads for the day. The ashes symbolize a form of the phrase, “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Resurrection Downtown, 1601 Grand Blvd., is a United Methodist church and is on the potential parade route.
