KCC looks to fill Board of Trustees vacancy following resignation of Jonathan Byrd

The Kellogg Community College Board of Trustees is seeking applications to fill a vacant seat on the board following the resignation of Trustee Jonathan Byrd.

Byrd was elected to a six-year term in 2020. The former board trustee is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in April 2022 at a gathering for Sen. Sean McCann, D-Kalamazoo, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

Byrd has denied doing anything criminal. His attorney, Anastase Markou, has suggested the allegations may be politically or professionally motivated. Markou could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.

"I am resigning my position as Trustee of Kellogg Community College and resigning all appointed boards associated with my service to the college," Byrd's resignation letter, addressed to Board President Steve Claywell in an April 5 email, reads in its entirety.

The person appointed to fill the KCC board vacancy will be expected to serve through Dec. 31, 2026, the remainder of the six-year term.

Applicants for the KCC Board of Trustees must reside and be registered to vote in the KCC tax district. Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria and wishes to apply must submit a letter of interest by May 4.

Letters of interest may be submitted to Claywell, in care of Marcia Campbell, board liaison, by email at president@kellogg.edu or by mail or in person in the Roll Building, Office 301, 450 North Ave. in Battle Creek.

A committee of the board will review applications in early May and make a recommendation for appointment at the board’s next regular meeting on May 17.
