Kearns home a ‘total loss’ following a devastating two-alarm fire

KEARNS, Utah (ABC4) — A family home in Kearns is considered to be a total loss after a devastating two-alarm fire quickly spread throughout the entire house late Thursday night, Feb. 8.

The fire happened near 6000 South and Loder Drive in Kearns around 9 p.m. United Fire Authority spokesperson Benjamin Porter told ABC4 the fire had started in the garage and spread to the rest of the home.

When first responders arrived, they said they were unsure if someone was still trapped inside and crews went for a save.

“It completely changes our tactics,” explained Porter. “We go from trying to get that fire out as quick as possible to trying to locate that potential victim and going in after them. Oftentimes, the best we can do is get that fire out as quickly as possible to make that atmosphere more tenable for someone inside.”

When crews learned the home was clear and all occupants were safely outside, Porter said first responders took a defensive stance to fight the fire. He said in a defensive strategy, all firefighters are pulled outside of the structure and the flames are tackled from outside.

Porter said the cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation is underway. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

“It started in the garage, so we all know that could mean a hundred different things,” said Porter.
