Keith Mayer: Celebrity Bartender, a city library fundraiser, set for May 19

May 2—Reading Public Library will hold its eighth annual Celebrity Bartender fundraiser on May 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Saucony Creek Franklin Station Brew Pub in Reading.

Arleny Pimentel, Ebony McNeil, Giuseppe Borelli, Gary Henne and Jed Richardson will shake, stir, pour and entertain all evening, organizers said.

All drink tips and online donations will support the creation of a "maker space" at the main

library. It will be located in the Teen Loft.

Touch-a-Truck Saturday

The Junior League of Reading PA Inc. is again partnering with the Reading Fightin Phils to bring the Touch-a-Truck fundraiser to FirstEnergy Stadium on May 7.

The sensory hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and the noise begins at 11 a.m. and lasts until 3 p.m., organizers said.

Touch-a-Truck gives children the opportunity to examine and explore their favorite trucks and other vehicles.

Kids age 11 and younger are free, with everyone 12 and older $5.

All proceeds will support the Junior League of Reading and its youth empowerment initiatives.

Founded in 1923, the Junior League is an organization of women committed to promoting

voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers, organizers said.

Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Sheep shearing at Hopewell

The annual sheep shearing and charcoal burn Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site is May 7.

Visitors will have the opportunity to observe both 21st- and 19th-century techniques for shearing sheep from noon until 3 p.m. at the Union Township site, rain or shine, organizers said.

At 11 a.m. park volunteer colliers will light and begin the spring charcoal burn demonstrating the process for converting wood to charcoal in the 19th century, organizers said.

The charcoal burn will last seven days around the clock with the conclusion occurring on May 14.

Support for these programs comes from the Friends of Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site.

Along with these demonstrations, park staff and volunteers will be present to discuss and demonstrate fiber arts, blacksmithing, and gardening techniques from the period, organizers said.

All programs are free.

Hopewell Furnace is about 5 miles south of Birdsboro along Route 345.

Hamburg Mega Reunion

Hamburg High School alumni are invited to the Blast from the Past Mega Reunion at the Hamburg Fire Company Field House on May 7.

Doors open at 4 p.m. with the main event scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with local business owner George Mitten acting as emcee. The fun continues until 10:30 p.m. with dancing and catching up with old friends.

The reunion brings together classmates from a 25-year period — all those who attended school in the graduating classes of 1960 to 1984, which includes the original Perry High School in Shoemakersville.

Numerous musicians are lined up to play.

A shuttle bus will run continuously from 5 to 10:30 p.m. between the field house front entrance and the Hamburg Middle School parking lot.

There's a sausage sandwich fundraiser for Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 1343 Long Lane Road, Maxatawny Township.
