Keith Mayer: Forum set for Democratic candidates for the 129th House District

May 8—The League of Women Voters of Berks County will moderate a candidates forum for Democratic candidates for the 129th Pennsylvania House District.

The forum will be held May 14 from 1:30 to 2:30 in the community room of the Wyomissing Public Library, 9 Reading Blvd.

Judith Kraines, a longtime League member, will be the moderator.

The forum is free.

Voters who live in the district are urged to attend.

The candidates are Mark Detterline, a Reading School District board member, and Johanny Cepeda-Freyitz, a member of Reading City Council.

Boone Homestead races

The Daniel Boone Homestead invites the community to the Daniel Boone Trails of History Run on May 22 starting at 9 a.m.

The day of family fun features a 5k, 10k, and half-mile fun run at the Homestead in Exeter Township, organizers said.

Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. The races will begin at the DeTurk House, which is just inside the main gates.

Runners will either compete in a 5k run, which is one lap around the Homestead, or in a 10k run, which is two laps. Teams competing in the 10k run will have one member run the first 5k, and the second member runs the second 5k, organizers said.

There will also be a half-mile fun run and walk for all ages around the historic area starting at the craft shed at 10:15 a.m.

Awards for the races will be given. Special awards will be given to the best-dressed entrants displaying the era of the 1770s.

Virginville Grange fundraiser

Celebrate Dairy Month with a fundraiser sponsored by the Virginville Grange Community Service Committee.

The pickup is June 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Virginville Grange Hall, 456 Main St., Virginville.

—Farm Show milkshakes (vanilla, chocolate, twist), 16 ounces, $5.

—Chef Shef's Catering pulled pork sandwich with roll, barbecue sauce, chips and applesauce, $9.

Pleasant Valley before Blue Marsh

Joe Swope will present "Pleasant Valley Lost: History of Blue Marsh Before the Dam" at the Leesport Area Historical Society meeting on May 23 at 7 p.m. at Bethany EC Church, 308 Main St., Leesport.

Pleasant Valley Lost chronicles the last days of a family dairy farm condemned to destruction by the federal dam project.

Pleasant Valley Lost is based on the true story surrounding the author's childhood farm.

Originally part of the estate of Pennsylvania's fifth governor, the farm had been in the Swope family since 1939 and was located in one of the most fertile areas of the region.

Park behind the church and enter there. All are welcome.

Oley Library bingo

Oley Valley Community Library gift card bingo is May 22 at the Oley Valley Middle School cafeteria.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and bingo starts at 1 p.m.

Habitat directors

Habitat for Humanity of Berks County has appointed Andrew Herbein to its board of directors.

Herbein is a senior vice president of commercial banking for Customers Bank and has

worked with Ready Set Read and other area non-profits, Habitat said.

Leesport Historical Society

Leesport Area Historical Society, 128 Main St., will hold a museum open house on June 5 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Visit the 1858 school house that served the community until 1961. Tour includes classroom circa 1940-'50s and museum room, including a rare printing press and Quaker marriage certificate from 1757.
