May 16—The Muhlenberg Township Parks & Recreation Department is planning a Memorial Day

Ceremony on May 30 at 9 a.m. near the flagpole in Jim Dietrich Park.

Speakers will be Tommy Dunston, a Vietnam veteran, and state Rep. Mark Rozzi.

The posting of the colors will be done by Muhlenberg Boy Scout troops

161 and 155.

Music will be provided by a choir from Muhlenberg High School.

Wreaths will be laid in honor of Gold Star families, fallen police officers, fallen firefighters and all military branches.

Light refreshments will be served afterward at the park's pavilion.

Township Parks & Rec is holding its annual Spring Fiesta on June 12 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Jim Dietrich Park.

The fiesta has a Latin flair in food, drink and music and also includes bull riding, face painting, temporary henna tattoos, a balloon artist, pinatas, crafts and direct sales businesses.

Mohnton parade

The Mohnton Area Memorial Day Parade will be held on May 30 at 9 a.m. from the VFW Post 9045 on West Wyomissing Avenue.

The parade will feature the Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps, P.O.S of A Mohnton Camp 211, Boy and Girl Scout troops, Mohnton borough representatives, and area police and fire departments.

The parade will proceed from the post to Walnut Street to North Church Street and end at the Mohnsville Cemetery where the memorial service will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Larry Graeff will be master of ceremonies. The speaker is National Guard Brig. Gen. Wilbur E. Wolf III.

The Rev. Robert W. Shuey of Zion E.C. Church will give the invocation and benediction.

After the service, the Reading Buccaneers will present their 2022 program on the Mohnton Playground at noon.

River trail meeting

Another in the series of meetings by Schuylkill River Greenways regarding the proposed route of the Schuylkill River Trail between Reading and Leesport is set for May 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All are welcome to come to the Schmidt Training and Technology Center at Reading Area Community College to provide input and suggestions on the plans.

Takeout dinner fundraiser

A takeout dinner fundraiser will be held by the Muhlenberg Lions Club on May 21.

The cost is $10 per meal and includes spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad and bread.

Pickup is at Monte Lauro European Gourmet, 1114 Mount Laurel Road in the township from 4 to 7 p.m., organizers said.

Tickets can be purchased from any lions club member, at the Monte Lauro stand at the Fairgrounds Farmers Market, or by calling Joel at 610-780-0930 or Ed at 610-929-3337.

Proceeds will fund Muhlenberg Lions Club charities, organizers said.

Artistry in stove plates

"Artistic Features Enhancing Stove Plates" is the topic at the next meeting of the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley.

It is May 25 at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata.

Richard Martin, an historical researcher from Penryn, Lancaster County, returns for a

second month to educate the audience with his knowledge of the artistic designs used to enhance

iron stoves, organizers said.

State police at Reading-based Troop L along Kenhorst Boulevard will offer free child safety seat checks onsite without appointment.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania announced the election of two members to its board of directors.

They are:

—Judy Freyer, chief investment officer emeritus of the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A).

—Ellen Iobst, an operations/executive leader in supply chain strategies.

Hawk Mountain hosting fundraiser

The Road to Recovery concert fundraiser is May 28 at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, which lies in Berks and Schuylkill counties.

Eight musical acts will perform from noon to 5 p.m. in the sanctuary's amphitheater, and the entrance fee is a donation to support chain saw artist Todd Gladfelter and his ongoing recovery from partial paralysis.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a camp chair or blanket, and food will be available to purchase.

Performers will include Keith Brintzenhoff, Crow Hill, Luke Hertzog, Texas Rose Band, Big Valley Bluegrass, The Youngers, Dave Kline & The Mountain Folk Band, a presentation by Todd's son Bryce Gladfelter, a song by the spring class of Hawk Mountain trainees, the singing of "You'll Never Walk Alone," and a finale jam featuring Todd, Dave Kline and other musicians.

Gladfelter, who fell from a roof in November, was commissioned in late 2019 to create works of art for Hawk Mountain's new outdoor amphitheater, organizers said.

He crafted multiple replicas of 32 species of native Appalachian wildlife, organizers said.

The Friends of the Wernersville Library will hold a bake sale in the lobby of Friendly's restaurant, 3024 Penn Ave., West Lawn on June 2 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Animal Rescue League

Mingle at the Museum: Scavenger Hunt Edition is June 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Reading Public Museum.

Tickets are $50 and the proceeds benefit the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.

Join fellow animal lovers for a come-as-you-are scavenger hunt-style event featuring delicious food stations, live caricatures, entertaining music and more, organizers said.

Attendees will move through the exhibits and enjoy diverse culturally inspired food stations with access to a cash beer and wine bar, organizers said.

Attendees will be given a scavenger hunt, designed by museum staff, through the exhibits on a quest to seek out famous works of art and artifacts throughout the evening, organizers said.

Promise Walk is June 5

This year's Promise Walk is June 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the West Reading Playground at Fifth Avenue and Sycamore Road.

All of the proceeds will support Family Promise of Berks County, whose mission is to help families and youth experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable independence through a community-based response, organizers said.

This event is fun for all ages and pets, too. Enjoy exercise and fun with family and friends. Form a team, walk individually or with your pet to raise funds.

An Evening at Sterling

An Evening at the Stirling is May 22 from 3 to 8 p.m.

It will be a night of show tunes, food, drinks, a silent auction, and the selection of the first Reading Pride Ambassador in a gala-style event.

Proceeds will benefit Reading Pride Celebration Festival 2022.

The mission of Reading Pride Celebration is to celebrate diversity in the LGBTQ+ community of Greater Reading, organizers said.

Apple Dumpling Festival

The Apple Dumpling Festival and Pageant is June 1-3 at Konopelski Katering's Willow Glen Park, 94 Park Ave., Sinking Spring, just off Penn Avenue

This year the pageant will include three categories: Little Miss Apple Dumpling, age

4 to 7; Junior Miss Apple Dumpling age 8 to 12; and Teen Miss Apple Dumpling age 13 to 15.

The girls will be completing for thousands of dollars in scholarships.

As always, there will be many different food items and nightly entertainment.

Museum commission honors

The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission recognized 27 individuals for their contributions of time, talent and expertise in 2020 and 2021 at a recent virtual Volunteer of the Year ceremony.
