Kelley brothers connect for a TD, but Bourne High football falls to South Shore Tech

HANOVER — Although the Bourne High football team lost to South Shore Tech 48-27 on Thursday, there were plenty of highlights.

The biggest was junior quarterback Ty Kelley throwing a 23-yard touchdown pass to his younger brother, Drew, a freshman. It was the brother’s first TD connection at the varsity level.

“It’s kind of cool to see that until you see them fighting on the sidelines like brothers always do,” Bourne coach John McIntyre said with a laugh.

Ty Kelley, a left-handed QB, rolled out to his left and lofted up a pass to open Drew Kelley down the field. Drew Kelley hauled in the pass and walked into the end zone. That cut the deficit to 42-20 with 5:29 left in the third quarter.

That TD pass capped a six-play 63-yard drive. Craig Hill kickstarted the drive with a 24-yard run.

The brothers nearly had a second TD connection on Bourne's next drive, but a penalty wiped a 57-yard TD connection off the board.

The Canalmen were shorthanded Thursday night, having to throw freshmen like Drew Kelley into the varsity fire.

"Tonight we started six freshmen because we had some sicknesses, we had some injuries this week,” said McIntyre. “It was a tough week of practice, but we battled. I was happy that we were able to put some young kids in the game and still move the football and establish the run game.”

South Shore Tech junior Todd Egan proved to be a tough matchup for Bourne. Egan scored 6 TDs, including an 82-yard kick return, and tallied 158 yards of offense on 11 touches.

Egan heaped much of the praise for his performance onto his offensive line, which included Chris White, Owen Lemere, Tyler Holmes, Finn Hagan, Cliff Monroe and Lucas Jones.

“We have the best offensive line in the world,” said Egan. “They’re violent, they pull, our line is great. I love them.”

The Canalmen led once in the game. In the first quarter, Hill, who ran 15 times for 148 yards, broke outside and ran up the sideline for a 65-yard score. Ty Kelley added the extra point to make it 7-6 Bourne, but Egan returned the ensuing kick 82 yards for a score and the Vikings never looked back.

In the second half, Bourne scored on its first three offensive drives. Bourne senior captain Matt Burr recovered a fumble on the Vikings second play of the second half on a botched snap. Kelley ran for 15 yards on a bootleg on the next play and senior captain Kelly DeSimone capped the quick drive with a 1-yard TD run. That cut the deficit to 36-14.

Bourne’s final scoring drive was a nine-play, 60-yard drive. The Canalmen converted a fourth-and-13 to extend the drive when Ty Kelley dropped a pass into Hill’s bucket for a 28-yard gain. Hill made a difficult over-the-shoulder grab near the sideline.

Hill later extended the drive with a 26-yard run on third down. On the next play, Ty Kelley scored on a 2-yard run to cut the deficit to 48-27.

Ty Kelley finished 2 of 3 passing for 51 yards with a TD pass. He added 41 yards on six carries.

“They’re good,” said McIntyre of his backfield. “Ty Kelley, he’s a game changer, and he’s good. He’s going to continue to get better, and our running backs, I thought Craig Hill had a great game. I thought the line blocked very well tonight. We just couldn’t stop them. They’re a senior team, and they’re big and strong, just a little quicker than we’re used to.”

Bourne, which opened the season with a 29-22 win over Upper Cape Tech, will try to get back above .500 next week when it heads to Cape Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m.
