BATTLE CREEK - After being away for a while, a favorite member of the Kellogg Community College athletic family returned Wednesday as the Bruins introduced their new-look mascot — Blaze.

In the first major update for the KCC mascot in more than 25 years, Blaze, a brown grizzly bear, arrived at the Miller Physical Education Building for the first time as part of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader.

Coming out at halftime of the women's game, Blaze went to work right away in leading the crowd in cheering for the Bruins as well as participating in a meet and greet in the gym lobby.

The previous incarnation of KCC’s Blaze mascot was introduced in the fall of 1997. After a quarter century of service to the college, Blaze went into hibernation this fall as the College’s Student Life Office, Athletics and Marketing and Communications departments collaborated with BAM! Mascots on a custom design for a new and improved costume.

According to KCC, the result is a friendly, approachable Blaze with bright eyes and a broad smile that will fit in at elementary school readings and community events as much as courtside in the gym. The new costume is also lighter, easier to see in and offers better mobility for the active lifestyle required for today’s modern mascots.
