Athens-Clarke Mayor Kelly Girtz will seek re-election.

He revealed his intentions in a video announcement Wednesday. Girtz was first elected mayor in 2018, after serving as a commissioner for more than 10 years.

No one has yet announced they will run against the incumbent.

Mayors serve four-year terms, with Girtz's term concluding at the end of this year. Qualifying for the race runs from March 7-11, with the election on May 24.

If Girtz is elected to a second term, he would be ineligible to run again in 2026, according to a county ordinance.

Coile Middle School, where Girtz once taught, served as the backdrop for his re-election announcement.

In his announcement, Girtz focused on the need for more development in housing and employment opportunities.

“We are creating a healthier, more prosperous Athens for all, with stronger housing and employment opportunities and brighter futures for our children, and I couldn’t be more excited for the chance to continue this journey together,” he said.
