Kenneth Dixon, Ellender’s five-time LHSAA state champion coach, named to LHSBCA hall of fame

Kenneth Dixon, a former Ellender High School girls basketball coach, was elected to the Louisiana High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Dixon will be inducted during the LHSBCA Hall of Fame ceremonies at Louisiana Christian University in Pineville at 1 p.m. on March 19.

Dixon died from complications of an aneurysm he suffered before a playoff game against Salmen in Houma on March 1, 2021. He was 70.

Dixon arrived at Ellender High in 1992 and built the girls basketball program into one of the state's best.

Dixon led Ellender to five state championships (1999, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2017), two state runner-up finishes (2001 and 2008) and 11 state tournament appearances. He had a 724-258 career record, which included 29 seasons at Ellender and 16 years as a coach in Texas. He is also credited for helping over 30 of his athletes receive college scholarships.

The Ellender girls basketball team dedicated its Class 4A state championship win over Warren Easton on March 5 in Dixon’s honor. It was the school’s sixth state championship. The team honored Dixon by putting a No. 6 jersey on the first seat of its bench.
