New Kensington police trying to fill positions after retirements and resignations

The New Kensington police force is short-staffed after two officers resigned and a detective retired.

According to our partners at TribLIVE.com, Detective Sgt. Dino DiGiacobbe’s retirement was approved by City Council on Monday. The council also approved the resignation of officers Jose Pantoja and Christian Leonarski.

DiGiacobbe has been with the New Kensington Police Department since 2002. DiGiacobbe has worked juvenile and sexual offense cases with Mayor Tom Guzzo.

Leonarski and two other officers were recognized for trying to save Angel Gray from a house fire in March.

Pantoja has been with the department since July 2019.

The departure of DiGiacobbe leaves big shoes to fill and the task of filling them comes at the same time that many staff members are taking vacations.

The council has approved an eligibility list for the positions of patrol sergeant and detective sergeant. The hiring process is expected to take four-to-six months.
