The Kent Fire Department is engaging in training against active fires through the end of June and the beginning of July, according to Fire Chief William Myers.

From roughly 9 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday, and then again July 5 through July 8, approximately 15 to 20 fire department personnel will gather at 226 & 230 S. Lincoln to battle controlled fires kindled in the properties for training purposes.

Chief Myers told the Record-Courier that Kent's mutual aid partners and all of Portage County's fire departments will participate.

"These training sessions are hard to come by," Myers saud,  "We are very fortunate that Kent State University provided these houses for us and the cost of doing the asbestos removal and hauling away all of the vinyl siding after the firefighters removed it all from the buildings."
