Kentuckian among 4 Marines killed during NATO training flight in Norway

A Kentucky native was among the four Marines who died Friday during a NATO training flight in Norway.

Cpl. Jacob M. Moore, 24, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and his fellow Marines were participating in a biannual training exercise, when their MV-22B Osprey had an "incident," according to the II Marine Expeditionary Force. The training, NATO Cold Response, is unrelated to the war between Russia and Ukraine, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere.

The cause is under investigation, but Norwegian police reported bad weather in the area.

"The cause of the incident is under investigation, and additional details will be provided as available," the Marines said in a tweet.

The Marines said that the bodies were being recovered by Norwegian authorities and will be brought to the United States.

"These pilots and crew were committed to accomplishing their mission and serving a cause greater than themselves," Maj. Gen. Michael Cederhom, said on Twitter on Sunday.

Moore has served in the Marines since August 2018, where he was a MV-22B crew chief of several units. He was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

The three others who died were Capt. Mathew J. Tomkiewicz of Indiana, Capt. Ross A. Reynold of Massachusetts and Gunnery Sgt. James Speedy of Ohio.

The four Marines were stationed near Jacksonville, N.C., at Camp Lejeune.
