Kentucky couple stops for coffee on road trip home and walks away with big lottery win

A Louisville couple won big when they picked up a $10 scratch-off lottery ticket while making a pit stop for coffee Monday morning.

Joselyn Bonilla and her husband stopped at Cave Run Lakemart in Morehead on their way home from visiting family in North Carolina, a Nov. 9 Kentucky Lottery release said.

The couple looks online to see remaining prizes before deciding on a ticket when they purchase, said Bonilla’s husband, who was not named in the release.

They purchased a Cash Double Doubler ticket and Bonilla saw $6,000 wins in each prize spot on the ticket when she scratched it off in the car. The back of the ticket displayed an additional $45,000 in winnings, bringing the total to more than $200,000.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Bonilla said. “We checked it using the app, and there it [the $225,000 prize] was!”

The odds of winning any prize on the game are 1 in 3.48, and most prizes range from $10 to $20.

The couple won $160,875 post-taxes. They are expecting a baby, the Kentucky Lottery reported, and said the winnings will allow Bonilla to stay home.
